Otsego 2000 is dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the environmental, historical and agricultural integrity of Otsego County.
Starting with its successful efforts to block development of power lines along the eastern shores of Otsego Lake in the historic Leatherstocking region, Otsego 2000’s mission has spanned more than four decades and has been instrumental in fostering sustainable development, protecting natural resources and enriching local communities.
Otsego 2000 is a 501©3 non-profit organization, donor-supported, with a staff of four and a volunteer board of 18 members.
Environmental preservation
Otsego 2000 is committed to safeguarding the natural beauty and ecological health of Otsego County, serving as a first responder to environmental threats. When hydrofracking for natural gas threatened the soil and water resources in the region, Otsego 2000 joined other environmental activist groups and successfully blocked those efforts. As New York state and the region grapple with climate change and development of renewable energy production, Otsego 2000 advocates for responsible development of wind, solar and other carbon-free sources of energy. The organization looks to ensure not only that the region’s natural landscapes remain pristine and accessible for future generations, but that farmland is preserved. By supporting local farmers in adopting eco-friendly techniques, Otsego 2000 helps to protect soil quality, reduce water pollution and promote biodiversity and healthy food production.
Water is a vital resource for any community, and Otsego 2000 recognizes the importance of protecting water bodies from contamination and overuse. The organization has been involved in numerous projects aimed at preserving the quality of regional waterways. These efforts include monitoring water quality and advocating for responsible land use policies that prevent runoff and pollution.
Historic preservation
Otsego County is rich in history — Otsego 2000 plays a crucial role in preserving this heritage, working to protect historical sites and structures and ensuring that the cultural legacy of the area is maintained. That includes advocating for the preservation and restoration of historic buildings and promoting heritage tourism. By keeping the history of Otsego County alive, Otsego 2000 helps to foster a sense of identity and pride among community members.
Heritage tourism is an essential component of Otsego 2000’s efforts to leverage historic preservation for economic benefit. By attracting visitors interested in the rich history of Otsego County, the organization stimulates local economies and provides opportunities for community engagement. Since 2013, Otsego 2000 has sponsored Glimmerglass Film Days, an environmentally-themed film series that has been enormously successful in showcasing the region and its historic and environmental significance.
Agricultural support
Agriculture is a cornerstone of Otsego County’s economy, and Otsego 2000 is dedicated to supporting local farmers and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. By bolstering the agricultural sector, Otsego 2000 ensures that farming remains a viable and sustainable livelihood in the region.
Local farmers’ markets are a vital component of community life, providing access to fresh, locally-grown produce and fostering direct connections between farmers and consumers. Otsego 2000 is the founder, sponsor and manager of the Cooperstown Farmers’ Market and is currently helping the Oneonta Farmers’ Market in its expansion efforts. The markets promote healthy eating behavior and stimulate local economies. Otsego 2000 is currently looking at ways it might reach out to communities in our region which suffer from food insecurity.
Community education and engagement
Education and community engagement are central to Otsego 2000’s mission. The organization offers various programs and workshops aimed at raising awareness about environmental issues, historic preservation and sustainable agriculture.
Through its diverse and comprehensive efforts, Otsego 2000 enhances the quality of life for residents and ensures that the county’s natural and cultural resources are preserved for future generations. Otsego 2000’s work creates a healthier, more vibrant and more connected community. As the organization continues to evolve, its positive impact on Otsego County remains.
