PEABODY — The Peabody Area Chamber of Commerce recently awarded two STEAM scholarships to graduating Peabody students.
Peabody Veterans Memorial High School’s Allyson Bettencourt and Nicholas Morad of St. John’s Prep each received $3,000 scholarships that will support their educations in the fields of science, technology, engineering, art or math, the chamber said in a statement.
In the fall, Bettencourt will attend Vassar College while Morad will head to the College of the Holy Cross.
“The Chamber Scholarship is about more than academic achievement—it’s about recognizing the potential of tomorrow’s innovators and leaders,” chamber President Deanne Healey said in the statement. “We’re proud to play a small part in helping these students reach their goals.”
The scholarship is awarded to recent high school graduates who live in Peabody, and who aim to pursue a career in STEAM.
It is funded through the support of local businesses and sponsors of the Chamber’s annual Torigian Golf Classic.
The selection process is highly competitive, the chamber said. Each year, the organization receives a large number of applications, which are reviewed in a blind selection process. Finalists sit for an in-person meet and greet with the scholarship committee before a winner is chosen.
This year’s scholarship committee was chaired by Lynn Feazel of Aflac/Feazel Benefits Inc., along with Denise DeSimone from In the Game and Vicki Cormier and Meghan Shea, both from North Shore Bank.
