GROVELAND — The annual Rubbish-to-Runway Red-Fashion Show is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Veasey Memorial Park, 201 Washington St.
Similar to a typical fashion show, R2R features models clad in various styles parading along the runway in Veasey Park’s Great Hall. The outfits they are wearing, however, are original creations re-fashioned from recycled or upcycled post-consumer materials. “Re-fashioning” refers to transforming old, tattered or out-of-style garments and materials into a completely new look.
Bicycle tires, bread tabs, used tents, men’s ties, plastic bags, mosquito netting – and other items headed for the trash or recycling bins – are among the materials that designers use to create outfits intended to awe, surprise, and delight audiences. Designers also choose the music their model struts to while on the catwalk, according to organizers.
Adopting the theme “community” for this year’s show, organizers challenged designers to draw artistic inspiration from local and global landmarks, natural resources, and traditions that highlight a community’s history, culture and resilience.
The intergenerational fashion show promotes inclusivity, body positivity, and sustainable practices, with proceeds from this zero waste event supporting the Friends of Veasey Park. A preshow reception with food and beverages available for purchase begins at 6 p.m. Following the show, from 9 to 9:30 p.m., ticketholders can meet the designers and view the fashion up close with coffee and dessert available for sale.
The Massachusetts Cultural Council helped fund this event.
