BEVERLY — The passenger of a plane that crashed outside Beverly Regional Airport Thursday morning has died, the Essex County District Attorney’s Office said Monday afternoon.
The man was the only occupant in addition to the pilot in the single-engine piston plane that crashed onto Sam Fonzo Drive after the aircraft failed to gain altitude upon taking off from Beverly Airport around 8:45 a.m. on Thursday.
The pilot, Geoffrey Andrews, 30, of Melrose, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a certified pilot and MIT scientist who was soon to become a new father.
The passenger was med-flighted to a hospital with severe injuries immediately after the crash, but later died.
The DA’s office did not release his identification on Monday.
The incident remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the DA’s office.
