The most recent adult welding class at Orleans/Niagara BOCES received the added benefit of testing for American Welding Society (AWS) certification. Under the instruction of teacher Mike Tolli, all six students learned the fundamentals of stick, MIG and TIG welding and prepared for the AWS welding certification test. Retired welding teacher Steve Frey, an AWS tester, performed the test. Four of six students passed the challenging assessment.
Says the American Welding Society, “Earning a specialized welding certification can reward you with higher salary potential, stronger employment demand, and better job stability.”
Orleans/Niagara BOCES intends to continue this opportunity for its welding classes moving forward, public relations specialist Lisa Bielmeier said.
Registration is currently underway for adult fall classes that will start on Sept. 15. In Lockport, BOCES offers a morning and an evening electrical class and an evening HVAC class. In Niagara Falls, offerings include a morning building trades class and an evening welding class. Evening automotive technology and machining class are available in Sanborn.
Orleans/Niagara BOCES staff can connect students with local grants to cover tuition costs. Prospective students should call immediately to start that process. The number is 716-731-6800. Ask for “adult skilled trades” for more information or go to wnytrades.com.
