ANDOVER — A Better Chance (ABC) of Andover held its Annual Scholar Celebration June 1 to honor the outstanding achievements and growth of its ABC Scholars.
At a time when educational equity and racial justice are increasingly under threat nationwide, ABC of Andover remains a vital force in supporting and uplifting young people of color.
The program continues to be a beacon—where students are not only seen and supported, but also encouraged and celebrated.
This year’s celebration was joyful and heartfelt, highlighting academic and personal milestones of each ABC Scholar.
In her first year as executive director, Lenis Perez served as emcee.
Resident Director Sandra Hilario introduced each scholar and presented personalized Superlative Awards, sharing reflections that captured each student’s unique spirit and contributions.
A special highlight of the evening was the celebration of graduating senior Janay Cox, who will be attending Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, this fall.
Her academic adviser, Delia Vallejo Welch, praised her academic excellence, while her host family, the Joyners, shared personal anecdotes and a touching slideshow chronicling their four years together.
Her parents and extended family were in attendance and offered words of gratitude to the ABC program. She closed the night with a heartfelt speech reflecting on her journey, the challenges she overcame, and the lasting impact of her ABC experience.
Also in attendance was Jayne Jones, guidance counselor at Andover High School, who has supported ABC Scholars throughout their academic journeys.
