Kingsley High School junior Anna Bauer is one of 10 students chosen for the prestigious Commander Naval Air Forces Flight Academy (CNAF) program. After a rigorous process, she was picked from among applicants across the country and international military bases and is the only cadet from Michigan. For eight weeks this summer, she will be expected to learn about aviation in the accelerated program. Upon successful completion, she will earn five college credits and a private pilot’s license. The program, valued at $28,000 per student, includes flight school tuition, room and board, and U.S. Navy training, and comes with zero cost or military service obligation to the students. Anna serves in the Kingsley High School’s Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps as the unit’s operations officer. She is a student representative on the board of education and recently earned top accolades at the Flint Regional Science & Engineering Fair.
Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio, announced 384 students who earned academic recognition on the spring semester dean’s list. Included is Rusty Oddo, a sophomore from Kewadin.
The following students recently were elected to membership into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines: Erin O’Neill of Benzonia at Grand Valley State University and Arian Gilbert of Manistee at Michigan State University. They are among approximately 20,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership.
Megan Barnes of Traverse City was named to Western Carolina University’s Spring 2025 Chancellor’s List. Barnes was among more than 2,900 students to achieve this honor. To qualify, students must earn a grade point average of 3.8 or higher. Students named to the Chancellor’s List are also named to the Dean’s List.
The University of Olivet recognized Zakkeus Bedford of Kingsley, a history major, as one of the Presidential Distinguished Medalists for the Class of 2025. The medalists are the top five students in the graduating class based on cumulative GPA earned in all baccalaureate university courses completed at Olivet.
