The Center for Lifelong Learning welcomes the public to participate in summer session classes June 2-30 on Roane State Community College’s Cumberland County campus at 2567 Cook Road.

Enrollment to join the Center for Lifelong Learning is $20 for the summer session. Afterward, students can attend as many classes as they want. A small materials fee may be charged for a specific class and is noted in the description.
Classes include:
Mondays, June 2, 9 and 16: Memoirs II. Join Kathleen Chevier to unlock stories within during this supportive three-session course designed for aspiring memoir writers. She will also share information about publishing options. 10:30 a.m.-noon.
Mondays, June 2, 9, 16 and 23: Unleash Your Inner Poet. Kathleen Chevier will guide students through the fundamental elements of poetry in these four sessions. No prior experience necessary. 9-10:15 a.m.
Mondays, June 2, 9, 16 and 23: Mindful Meditation. This course facilitated by Mike Crawley, is open to everyone, no prior experience required, and is grounded in a secular, easy-to-understand approach. 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Tuesday, June 3: First Ladies. Alan Lowe will return from Oak Ridge, TN, to continue his discussion about the significant contribution to their husbands’ presidencies. 10:30 a.m.-noon.
Wednesdays, June 4, 11, 18 and 25: Google Suite. Join Greg Gibson to hear about the many tools that are free with a Google account: word processing, spreadsheets, slides, storage drive, email and more. 9-10:30 a.m.
Wednesday, June 4: D-Day Deception and Deliverance. Join Bob Emrick for this poignant visual collage and historical account leading up to the invasion of Normandy. His discussion will lead up to the 75th anniversary of D-Day, which he attended June 6, 2019, at the American cemetery above Omaha Beach. 1:30-3 p.m.
Thursdays, June 5 and 12: Seashell Art. Join Sue Kizer as she shares the art of using shells to help create pictures in this two-session class. The $5 materials fee will be collected at the first class. 9 a.m.-noon.
Tuesday, June 10: Helping Others through their Grief. Loss is a given and comes in many forms. Sandy Fink will led this interactive class in discussing healthy and unhealthy responses to better equip students when the situation presents itself. 10:30 a.m.-noon.
Tuesdays, June 10, 17 and 24: Ancient Mysteries of Egypt. Join Larry Pahl in a three-session close-up look at some of the meanings embedded in the Egyptian monuments. The pyramids, temples and strange hieroglyphic characters carry a worldwide aura of mystery and wonder. 1:30-3 p.m.
Thursday, June 12: Snakes of Tennessee. Cooper Jackson will share his knowledge and love of all life forms, including snakes. This class will help participants identify snakes they fear and help them understand snakes’ benefit in the environment. 9-10:30 a.m.
Thursday, June 12: Safe Retirement Strategies to Eliminate Risk and Uncertainty. Join Stan Stillwell as he presents tools for retirees and those nearing retirement to integrate Social Security benefits, savings, investment and retirement accounts, household wealth, other assets into a safe and secure plan for retirement. No prior financial expertise is required. 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Tuesday, June 17: Nuclear Power. Bill Fowley will give a basic overview on how nuclear power plants operate, including radiation concerns, accident prevention, and environmental impacts. 10-11:30 a.m.
Wednesdays, June 18 and 25: iPhone Photography. By popular request, Russ Schubert is back with his patient and thorough two-session instruction on how to take, view, edit and share photos quickly and accurately. 1-2:30 p.m.
Monday, June 23: Cheese Making. Kim McKoy’s interactive class teaches basic way to make mozzarella cheese with ingredients already on hand. Once the participant understand the basic principles of how it’s made, a whole world of cheese possibilities opens up. A materials fee of $5.00 will be collected at the beginning of the class. 2:30-4:30 p.m.
Monday, June 23: Tales from the Farm and Life on The Plateau. Joe Sherrill will share stories about his family’s life in Crab Orchard over several generations, and the family farm. A video made during one of his farm tours will accompany his entertaining tales. 10:30 a.m.-noon.
Thursday, June 26: Dorset Buttons. Michelle Bayliss leads an interactive class in making these buttons using metal or plastic rings and a wide range of threads and yarns. Dorset buttons originated in England in the 18th century, using rings made of sheep’s horn, wrapped and woven with woolen yarn. A materials fee of $5 will be collected at the class. 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Thursday, June 26: The Supreme Court. Cheryl Brown will be back to share her vast knowledge of the government, with a clear and comprehensive understanding of the Supreme Court’s past, present, and enduring significance. Prepare to engage with thought-provoking concepts and gain valuable insights into the cornerstone of the U.S. legal system. 10:30 a.m.-noon.
Monday, June 30: Fire Safety. Lt. Keith Larkin will share a few simple precautions to make homes safer and reduce the chance of a fire emergency. The class is all about empowering participants with practical tips and tools to protect themselves, their loved ones, and their property. 1:30-3 p.m.
