Great New Books
A Dead Draw by Robert Dugoni. Sharp-shooting Seattle Detective Tracy Crosswhite faces old demons after being transferred to her department’s cold case unit. Following a traumatic shoot-out with master criminal Ed House, who kidnapped and killed her sister, Tracy has been pulled from the major crimes division. Her first cold case leads to the arrest of Erik Schmidt, a mentee of House’s, for the murder of two young girls. Schmidt follows her to her hometown of Cedar Grove, WA, where he kidnaps her young friend and shooting instructor, Lydia, and demands a sunrise duel with Tracy in exchange for Lydia’s freedom.
Hidden Nature by Nora Roberts. Sloan Cooper, a corporal in Maryland’s Natural Resources Police, is shot while stopping a robbery at a gas station. Faced with a long recovery process, she returns to her family home, where she meets Nash Littlefield, a former New York City lawyer who moved to the small town to start a contracting business with his younger brother. The two embark on a pair of related cases and come to believe that a serial killer is stalking the region.
Never Flinch by Stephen King. PI Holly Gibney guards Kate, an outspoken feminist activist who has been receiving messages from an increasingly aggressive stalker. Meanwhile, Holly’s friend, Buckeye City Police Detective Izzy Jaynes, is assigned a case that involves a threat to kill 13 innocents and one guilty person. As Izzy investigates and Holly gets pulled further into Kate’s orbit, their cases converge, forcing them to work together to prevent a larger disaster. There is real suspense in the dual narratives and the actions of an increasingly off-kilter villain.
Library Laugh II used to be a bartender for the mob. It was whiskey business.
Stingy Schobel SaysThat delicious chocolate bar is obviously a no-go treat for dogs, but have you thought about the plastic wrapper that encased it? The residual smears of chocolate could be irresistible for a dog to eat, and when they do, that wrapper can attach itself to the lining of your pet’s stomach, which could lead to a pricey visit to the veterinarian. Treat candy wrappers as dangerous items and discard them so animals can never find them.
Library Laugh IIWhat kind of burger tells your fortune? A medium burger!
Spring Fling BonusI went to a bridge builder’s seminar. It was absolutely riveting.
