NEWBURYPORT — As Greater Newburyport celebrates the unofficial beginning of Summer” this weekend, the First Religious Society Unitarian Universalist (FRSUU) launches a new element of its long tradition of music and community engagement.
“Sing Out” is new program to encourage everyone, regardless of their level of musical training or abilities to join their voices in song. The inaugural event takes place Saturday at 4 p.m. at the FRSUU Meetinghouse on Pleasant Street. Tickets are $5 at the door.
“For thousands of years, people all over the world have gathered to share their stories, hopes, and dreams in song” says Nick Place, FRSUU’s director of church music and events. “Newburyport has a long history of many wonderful musical traditions, and we would like to extend that to more people regardless of their previous experience.”
Sing Out is a simple idea, people of all abilities come together in one place, to learn and perform one, generally well-known song. Place will lead a rehearsal and then attendees will sing John Lennon’s iconic anthem “Imagine,” during which we’ll encourage all to film and take pictures for their social media accounts.
“One song. One hour to learn. One performance. What better song to start off this new musical endeavor than “Imagine,” a song whose spirit suggests connection, unity, and peace,” Place said.
