BOYS TENNIS
St. John’s Prep 5, Manchester Essex 0: The defending Division 1 state champions completed their second straight unbeaten regular season by blanking the Hornets. Junior Rudr Malayya (6-1, 6-1) and seniors Jack Prokopis (6-0, 6-0) and Luke Free (6-1, 6-2) were victorious in singles play for St. John’s Prep, which will enter the postseason at 17-0. In doubles, senior Luke Prokopis and junior Boris Kouzminov (6-1, 6-1), as well as juniors James de Buy Wenniger and Wade Evitts (6-2, 6-0) completed the sweep.
Danvers 3, Beverly 2: A clutch three set victory from Kevin Ouellette and Darius Chung at first doubles (4-6, 6-2, 10-7) allowed the Falcons to improve to 3-11 in their penultimate match of the spring. Kyle Sillars and Anthony Guadino added a win at second doubles, 6-3, 6-3, as did third singles player Connor DiTomaso, 6-4, 6-4.
Bishop Fenwick 4, Cardinal Spellman 1: Giuseppe Lepore and Stephen Russo (6-0, 6-2) and Jamie Aguilar and Chris Connors (6-1, 6-3) each won their do-7es.
Swampscott 5, Winthrop 0: Playing 10-game pro sets, the Big Blue swept with four 10-0 matches and a comeback victory at second singles from Victor Zeissig, who won 11-9 after being down, 7-4. Sam Schepens and Julian Flacke, as well as the doubles teams of Elijah Stadtlander and Daniel Wabno, as well as Costa Shub and Max Arrendondo, all prevailed without a loss.
Newburyport 4, Marblehead 1: The Magicians (now 15-2 overall) took two matches to three sets against an excellent Newburyport team, but were knocked off in both. Their lone win came at second doubles from senior Austin Bacon and sophomore Alex Boehning, 6-2, 6-2.
GIRLS TENNIS
Ipswich 5, Gloucester 0: Straight set victories were the order of the day for the Tigers (12-4). Claire Buletza (6-1, 6-0), Abbie Allen (6-0, 6-1) and Emily Hannibal (6-0, 6-0) cruised in singles competition, and their doubles teammates did the same as Sophie Johannknecht and Lila Borgman (6-1, 6-0) and the second team of Alex Marino and Frannie Hertz (6-1, 6-1) finished off the Fishermen.
Beverly 5, Saugus 0: Capturing their second sweep in as many days, the Panthers (now 7-7) saw Adeline Kontos hit eight aces and 20 winners on her way to a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at first singles. Second singles player Olivia Devereaux (17 winners) also breezed, 6-0, 6-1, as did Sophie Litterer at third singles, 6-3, 6-2. At first doubles, Sophia Gallo and Ella McAleer took a 6-1, 6-2 win, and Claire Fitzgerald and Lily Scott were 6-1, 6-4 winners at second doubles.
Marblehead wins two matches: Playing one match each against two different teams because of recent rainouts, the Magicians used their depth to topple both Salem (5-0) and Peabody (4-1). Against the Witches, it was Abbie Goodwin (6-1, 6-1), Callie Gilmore (6-0, 6-0) and Lilah Siegel (6-1, 6-0) who prevailed in singles play and Caroline Bruett/Josie Reers (6-1, 6-0) and Eliana Berger/Zoi Guzzini (6-0, 6-1) who did so in doubles. Against the Tanners, Sami Dosch (6-2, 6-3) and Nina Johnson (6-1, 6-1) claimed wins at first and second singles, respectively, as did the tandems of Lani Gilmore/Reese Friedman (6-2, 6-1) and Joy Meshulam/Erin Wilder (6-0, 6-0).
Manchester Essex 4, Swampscott 1: Playing for the seventh time in five days and without the services of their No. 1 player, the Big Blue (12-3) gave it all they had in a clutch non-league match. Sasha Fafel and Janielle De La Cruz were winners at second doubles, 6-4, 6-1.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Marblehead 16, Winthrop 3: Emma Ryan finished with three goals, Zoe Dwyer and Kathryn Commoss each scored twice with three assists, and teammate Maddie Forbes added two more goals and a pair of assists for the Magicians (11-6), who improved to 9-3 in Northeastern Conference action. Caitlyn Ryan (2), Ramona Gillett, Sammy Walker, Ella McConnell (2 assists), Avery Barbeau (assist) and Anna Rausch also had goals for the winners, who also got one assist from Gretchen Smith and four saves from goalie Molly Bullard.
Beverly 18, Gloucester 0: Mackenzie Pouliot and Sasha Miller were two of 11 Panthers who found the scoresheet, each scoring three goals in a road rout. Joselyn Silva (assist), Madeline LeBlanc and Gwendolyn Jones each provided two goals for Beverly (13-5), with Cameron Koloski (assist), Ashley Wallace (assist), Lindsay Kaszynski (assist), Annabelle Miller, Ava Freitas and Addison Sheppard also scoring. Madeline Reynolds didn’t have to make a single save in net for the Orange-and-Black before being relieved by backup goalie Megan McCormack (5 saves) to complete the shutout.
Danvers 10, Salem 9 (OT): Savannah Botthof had a team-high four goals with one assist and goalie Annabel Boyd stopped 13 shots in net as the Falcons (4-13) captured an overtime victory on the road. Olivia Henry scored twice, assisted on another goal, scooped five ground balls and won 10 draw controls for Danvers, with Sienna Goldberg adding a goal and an assist. Caroline Horn, Mia Lewis and Deanna Figueiredo had the other goals for the Blue-and-White, with Kayda Brown adding one assist.
Swampscott 6, Masconomet 4: Avery Laundry had three goals, Cecilia Tripp added two and Lia Beatrice contributed one as the Big Blue (13-4) held serve at home and won a defensive battle in their regular season finale. Goaltender Lilah Caplan (10 saves) had another strong game between the pipes for the winners, who also received one assist from Fiona Keaney.
Ava Gauvain and Grace Blaney both had two goals for Masconomet (8-11), with Gauvain adding a dozen ground balls, Blaney adding nine and Riley Bovardi eight.
Peabody 14, Saugus 1: The Tanners (12-5) used a complete team effort to down the Sachems in their second-to-late regular season contest.
BOYS LACROSSE
Beverly 13, Gloucester 6: Six goals and a pair of assists from Connor Wallace gave the Panthers (4-11) their fourth win in the last six games. Lucas Carbone had another big game in net, stopping 22 shots. Other offensive standouts included Talan Rafter (2 goals, 2 assists), Will Burgess (2 goals, 2 assists), Ridley Acheson (2 goals, assist), Jonny Mezza (goal) and Kaleb Kaplan (assist).
Danvers 21, Salem 4: Eight points, including three goals, from Cooper Dunham, seven more points (3 goals) from Tommy Cyr, and five goals from Tyler Moody enabled the Falcons (6-11) to snap a four-game losing streak. Ben Campbell finished with four goals while Brady Tersolo added three goals and a helper for the Blue-and-White, who received additional tallies from Connor Harvey (2) and Trevor McDermott, plus one assist each from Hunter DeDominics and Keegan Crowley (the first point of his career). Goalie Aidan Perry made 11 saves in the win.
Goalkeeper Vincent Milano wound up with 15 saves for Salem (), which got its scoring from Mikey Curtin (2 goals), Andreas Bernal and AJ Alessi, plus assists from Gabe Bennett and Jake Lister.
Masconomet 13, Swampscott 12: In a wildly entertaining game, captain John Miga scored three times and dished out six assists as the Chieftains (13-4 overall) finished the NEC portion of their schedule unbeaten. Colten Russo added three goals and two assists; Tony Giacchino, Colin Driscoll and Andrew Kelly all had two goals; Chris Young also scored; and Jack Fabiano and Will Carey (15-for-25 on faceoffs) added one assist each. Jack Wheadon turned aside nine shots in net.
Down by five goals (9-4) heading into the final quarter, the Big Blue put forth a tremendous comeback attempt led by senior captain (5 goals, 2 assists). Jason Rothwell added four goals, Chase Russo two and Tyler Ostroff one while another captain, Timmy Sheehan, had five saves for Swampscott (now 9-8).
Marblehead 15, Winthrop 2: Defenseman Gavin Ferretti excelled in his own end of the field and added his first career goal to give Marblehead a blowout win. The Magicians’ top four scorers — Reece Moore (2 goals, 5 assists), Will Sullivan (4 goals, 2 assists), Tyler Forbes (3 goals, assist) and James Achterhof (2 goals) did it again offensively, helped by Colin White’s goal and two assists, plus solo strikes from Owen Dulac and Grady Becker. Sean Dolan chipped in with one assist, and goalie Colin Maniaci wound up with five saves.
SOFTBALL
Marblehead 9, Medford 3: Tessa Francis blasted a three-run homer in the third inning and struck out 15 Mustangs while allowing five hits and two earned runs to propel the Magicians (15-2) to another road win. Lyla McGovern cranked a double and knocked in three runs while Luka Bornhorst was 2-for-4 for Marblehead, with Ashley and Isabel Mortensen, Nora Mayhan and Kate Andriano also hitting safely.
Georgetown 10, Hamilton-Wenham 1: Viola Fazio had a 3-for-4 showing at the plate for the Generals (8-10) and Annie Soleimani went 2-for-4 with her team’s lone RBI.
Saugus 9, Swampscott 0: The Big Blue (8-8) dropped their third straight despite getting two hits each from Lauren Fahey and Mia Tringale. Hayden Haskell threw the complete game, striking out four.
BASEBALL
Hamilton-Wenham 6, North Reading 2: Liam O’Bannon’s 2-out RBI single in the sixth broke a 2-2 tie and the Generals (15-3) added to the lead in the seventh to earn a CAL victory. Cormac Heney struck out 13 batters and allowed only one hit over the complete game, Gian Gamelli blasted a 2-run homer, Caden Schrock had two hits and Chris Cann went 3-for-3 with two RBI.
Beverly 12, Salem 2: Senior captain Connor Connolly returned to the lineup and had four RBI on two hits including a double to send the Panthers (10-7) by their rivals and officially into the state tournament. Teddy Fisher had two hits, three runs scored and three RBI, Charles Salerno and Callan McCay both scored three runs and Graham Gavin tossed a five inning complete game with 11 strikeouts, his fifth double digit K start of the season.
Jordan O’Malley struck out eight for the Witches (9-8) and Rocco Ryan had two hits.
St. John’s Prep 5, St. John’s Shrewsbury 4: Nic Lembo made a diving catch to save runs and Jesse Swartz knocked in two runs in the top of the seventh as the Eagles (11-6) came from behind to win on the road with four runs in the top of the seventh. James Willett threw the last 2 1/3 innings to grab the win, Connor Durney had a hit with an RBI and Ty Spear scored two runs.
Georgetown 1, Ipswich 0: Michael Queen allowed only two hits over six innings but the Tigers dropped a heartbreaker as the Royals plated the game’s only run in the fourth. Brady Merry went 2-for-3 at the dish for Ipswich (now 3-15).
Saugus 8, Essex Tech 1: Declan Feeney had a pair of hits and Jose Pagan drove in the Hawks’ run, but Saugus took advantage of ten hits to win under the lights at World Series Park.
