As planning moves forward for Niagara County’s Purple Heart celebration in August, anyone who knows of a Purple Heart veteran not already included in the Book of Honor must submit the necessary paperwork by May 30 to be part of the celebration.
The celebration will take place Aug. 3 at the Purple Heart Monument located at the Niagara County Courthouse.
Currently there are more than 400 names on the Purple Heart Monument and in the county’s Purple Heart Book of Honor.
The Purple Heart is a military decoration awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who were wounded or killed by enemy action. To be included in the Book of Honor and to take part in this year’s event, veterans or their families must complete a short application that can be obtained at https://tinyurl.com/mryr6ats.
“We look forward to adding more names this year as we continue our efforts to preserve the legacy of any Niagara County resident who was wounded or killed fighting for our country,” County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski said. “If a family member knows of a Purple Heart veteran who may have passed, we can work with them to complete the necessary form to ensure their loved one’s contribution is forever enshrined on our monument and in the Book of Honor.”
