The Crab-Orchard Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has honored members of the community with its 2025 leadership awards.
Cumberland County High School senior Jordan Kerley and Stone Memorial High School senior Courtney Calhoun were awarded the DAR Good Citizen Award.
This award was created in 1934 to recognize and reward high school seniors who exemplify the qualities of a good citizen. These qualities include dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.
Kerley and Calhoun were selected for the award by the faculty of their respective schools. The students must be enrolled in accredited public or private secondary schools that are in good standing with their state boards of education.
Kiera Henly, a home-schooled student, was selected by the unit commander of the Young Marines to receive the DAR Outstanding Cadet Medal.
This medal recognizes a cadet that has distinguished himself/herself through outstanding leadership, honor, service, courage, and patriotism. It is presented through the National Defense Committee which was established in 1926 by the National Society DAR to assist in carrying out the historical, educational and patriotic purposes of the National Society.
The Community Service Award recognizes worthy individuals for unpaid voluntary achievements in several areas including patriotic, historical and citizenship.
The 2025 recipient is Terry Mitchell, who is retired from the U.S. Army. Mitchell has participated in several community activities which include Commander of American Legion Post 163. In 2024 he helped organize and direct the Veterans Parade held in November.
The Daughters of the American Revolution is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to preserving American history, securing America’s future through better education and promoting patriotism.
The Crab-Orchard Chapter welcomes women 18 years and older who can prove lineal descent to a patriot who fought or gave aid during the Revolutionary War period. Those interested in membership should contact Charlotte Reynolds at 931-200-2780.
