CUMBERLAND — The Potomac River crested at 23.58 feet at Wiley Ford, West Virginia, late Tuesday night — more than six feet above flood stage.
The river measured at 22.39 feet Wednesday at 7 a.m., according to Tim Thomas, National Weather Service observer in Cumberland.
Wills Creek in the Narrows crested at 14.12 feet during Tuesday’s daylong rainfall, compared to a level of approximately 10 feet at 8:30 a.m., Wednesday, according to Thomas.
“We aren’t really expecting to see a clear day until Sunday,” said Thomas, who measured Cumberland’s 24-hour rainfall at 2.84 inches as of 7 a.m. Wednesday.
A flood warning for Allegany County posted by the weather service remained in effect until 11 a.m. The weather service reported a threat of showers and thunderstorms through the remainder of this week.
“It will be a few days until we get to anything normal, but the waterways are beginning to recede,” said Thomas. “It’s not time to drop our guard.”
