Editor’s note: Scooping Grounders is an occasional Q and A that we’ll host with a local high school girls lacrosse player.
Name: Madi Barrett
High School: Peabody
Year in school: Senior captain
Position: Midfield
What’s your favorite part about lacrosse?
The draw. Last season, I reality started working hard on different strategies for taking the draw and playing on the circle. It’s an important factor of the game, and the feeling of winning the ball is so rewarding.
What makes being part of a program like Peabody special?
My teammates. We’re all good friends and it’s so much fun to play together. The seniors have been playing together since we were in first grade, which makes this last season together extra special.
Any special meaning behind your jersey number?
I’ve been No. 18 in lacrosse since I was in fifth grade. I’ve always had it, so I decided to keep it through high school because it just felt like tradition.
What’s the best pre- or post-game snack?
I always have a Rice Krispies treat before my games. I always bring a box of them onto the bus to share with my teammates.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever gotten about lacrosse or sports in general, and who was it from?
The best advice I’ve ever received is to not take criticism in a negative way. My dad always tells me to take the criticism I receive from coaches, teammates, and teachers and use it in a positive way. This advice has helped through high school on the field and in class.
What’s your favorite class at Peabody High and/or your favorite teacher?
My favorite class at Peabody High is criminal justice with Mr. Halsted. I’ve been taking criminal justice since my freshman year and it inspired me to choose criminal justice as my college major.
If you had a long bus trip for a game, what’s the one movie/show or music you’d have ready to stream to pass the time?
Our team always brings a speaker on the bus. I don’t have a specific song or artist that I listen to pre-game, but I enjoy singing with my teammates on the bus rides.
What’s one thing people don’t know about you?
I love being outdoors. Some of my favorite things to do are ski in the winter and kayak in the summer.
What was the thing that made you want to play lacrosse in college, and what made SNHU the perfect spot for you?
Playing lacrosse in college has been my dream since I first started playing. I have so much love for the sport. Lacrosse has always been my outlet, distracting me from anything negative going on in my life. SNHU was the perfect spot for me because the team is competitive, I connected well with the coaching staff, and the campus is beautiful.
If you could take a free trip anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would go to Italy because of all the sites and the food.
