CATONSVILLE — WVU Potomac State punched its ticket to the NJCAA Division 2 World Series for a fourth straight season Sunday.
The Catamounts (39-4) routed host CCBC Catonsville, 8-0, in five innings for the Region 20 title.
Potomac State scored five runs in the first inning, the big hit a bases-clearing double by Skyla Compton, and added three in the second.
That proved to be enough offense, as Bishop Walsh alum Chloe Greise tossed a four-hit shutout, striking out three and walking two in five innings to improve her record to 32-2 this season.
Potomac State qualified for nationals the past three years under Craig Rotruck. The Catamounts are led by first-year head coach Chris Greise this season.
This year’s tournament will be held at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama, and run from May 20-24.
Potomac State’s ace Chloe Greise recorded a complete-game victory at nationals last year, leading the Catamounts to a 6-4 victory over Macomb to record the program’s first World Series win in school history.
Potomac State needed some late-game heroics to win the Region 20 crown.
On Saturday, College of Southern Maryland jumped out to a 5-1 lead over Potomac State through three innings, fueled by two-run home runs by Laci Johnson and Katelyn Tkach and a solo homer off the bat of Megan Chroniger.
Ashton Spiker brought the Catamounts within a run with a three-run home run in the third, and Lindsay Mowry leveled the score at five with an RBI double in the sixth.
Petersburg alum Braylee Corbin then walked it off with a solo home run in the seventh for a 6-5 victory, moving the Catamounts into the championship game.
Lacie Miller pitched 4 1/3 shutout innings out of the bullpen to keep Potomac State in the game.
