SHORT GAP, W.Va. — No. 1 Frankfort won its playoff opener in Class AAA, Region 2 Section I on Wednesday, defeating No. 5 Keyser 8-3.
The Falcons (23-0) scored two runs across four separate innings while the Golden Tornado (17-8) scored all three of its runs in the final two frames.
Tayler Likens (Kent State commit) led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run that stretched Frankfort’s lead to 7-1.
Bibs Felton put Keyser on the board with a solo shot to center in the top of the sixth.
Avery Noel (Liberty) went the distance for the Falcons, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts.
Leighton Johnson was charged with four earned runs on five hits and five walks with two strikeouts for the Tornado.
Hampshire 7, Berkeley Springs 2
ROMNEY, W.Va. — Hampshire avoided elimination with a win over Berkeley Springs on Wednesday.
Charly Ashton led the Trojans (6-20) going 2 for 4 with three RBIs.
Ava Call, Chaz Keller, Madynn Frye and Natalie Sions also recorded two hits.
Bri Cosner went the distance for Hampshire, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts.
Keyser hosts Hampshire in an elimination game on Thursday.
Petersburg 8, Moorefield 0
PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Ella Markwell’s four RBIs including a home run led Petersburg over Moorefield in Wednesday’s Class AA, Region 2 Section I playoff.
Markwell went deep for a three-run shot in the bottom of the first that put the Vikings (18-10) in front 3-0.
Gracie Carpenter threw five shutout frames for Petersburg, allowing a hit and a walk with a pair of strikeouts.
Kerigan Bergdall’s single in the third was the lone hit for the Yellow Jackets (11-11).
Moorefield hosts Philip Barbour in an elimination game on Thursday.
Tucker County 2, East Hardy 1
HAMBLETON, W.Va. — Tucker County walked off East Hardy on Wednesday in the Class A, Region 2 Section I playoffs.
Tied at 1 in the bottom of the seventh, Peyton Hicks hit an RBI triple to center.
Gracie Hershman provided the Cougars lone run on an inside-the-park home run in the top of the third.
Hershman and Ginger Combs each recorded two hits for East Hardy.
Combs went 6 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run off four hits and six walks.
East Hardy returns to Tucker County in an elimination game on Thursday.
