GIRLS TENNIS
Marblehead 3, Masconomet 2: After Abbie Goodwin came up with a huge win at third singles (6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-0), the Magicians’ second doubles team of Josie Reers and Caroline Bruett got the decisive third point for their team with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph. Lani Gailmore and Reese Freedman won their match at first doubles as well, 6-2, 6-3.
“I was super proud of the girls today, we finally beat Masco after they had dominated our (Northeastern) Conference for the last six years,” said Marblehead head coach Tracy Ackerman, whose squad improved to 6-3 this spring. “Josie and Caroine stayed cool under pressure, with Josie being super aggresive at net, and Bruett providing consistency.”
Teagan Skulley won her match at first singles for Masconomet (6-0, 6-1), while freshman Ria Kundalia swept her match at second singles, 6-0, 6-0. The Chieftains are now 6-1 on the season.
Ipswich 3, Manchester Essex 2: A sweep in doubles enabled the Tigers to pull off one of their best triumphs of the spring. Sophie Johannknecht and Lila Borgman teamed up to win their match at first singles, 6-4, 6-3, while Alex Marino and Frannie Hertz did likewise at second doubles, 6-2, 7-5 to finish off the IHS victory. Claire Buletza pulled out a win at singles, going three sets before winning 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
Danvers 5, Peabody 0: The Falcons soared to 7-4 on the season after straight set victories in all five spots in the lineup. Madison Savage (6-0, 6-0), Sophie Sanidas (6-1, 6-3) and Josie Vogel (6-1, 6-0) providing the wins at singles play, with Raina Langlois and Ava Nadeau at first doubles, plus Cali Coffin and Paige Sherman at second doubles, each won 6-1, 6-1.
Tiffany Bettencourt had an excellent all-around match at second singles for Peabody.
Hamilton-Wenham 5, Rockport 0: Freshman third singles player Charlotte Ireland prevailed in a three-hour match, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, to help the Generals improve to 7-1 on the season. Naomi Provost and Emily McIntosh each won 6-0, 6-0 at first and second singles, respectively, as did Tessa Hunt and Sadie Gamber at second doubles. Completing the sweep at first doubles were the tandem of Olivia Romans and Sofie Greene, 6-1, 6-1.
SOFTBALL
Beverly 5, Danvers 4: Trailing by three with two outs in the top of the seventh and final inning, the Panthers rallied and took the lead when Meredith Johnston doubled home the tying and go-ahead runs. Athena McKenna (2 RBI) and Lidia Miedema both went 2-for-4 for Beverly (now 9-2), while Miedema also picked up the win on the hill after scattering eight hits and two earned runs while striking out five.
Skylar Coakley went the distance for Danvers (6-5), allowing nine hits, four earned runs and three walks while punching out four hitters. Offensively, Lila Flynn and Addi McCarty each had two hits and a stole base, while fellow Falcons Alli McGinnity, Brooke Wilichoski and Taylor Landry all knocked in one run.
Peabody 7, Masconomet 5: Ayanna Cirame got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh and the Tanners (6-7) got by the Chieftains by scoring five in the bottom of the sixth. A 2-run homer by Mya Flores proved to plate the winning runs while junior captain Lizzy Bettencourt and freshman Liv Guarino hit back-to-back solo home runs in the second to erase what had been a 2-0 Masco lead. Jess Steed had two hits for Peabody, freshman Gabby Gosselin had a key RBI single, Jazzy Iraola doubled and Cirame went the distance pitching out of trouble all day with 12 left on base.
Sabrina Cafarelli went 3-for-4 for the Chieftains (5-7) while Angie Vecchio (double, 2 RBI) and Emma McCormack both had two hits. Sydnee Vocino limited a dangerous Tanner lineup to eight hits over six innings.
Pingree 18, Dana Hall 6: Antonella Najim allowed just two hits and struck out six while going 4-for-5 offensively with three RBI as the Highlanders won their third straight game. Ava Mae Mierz also had a big day at the plate for Pingree (now 3-4), going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three RBI.
Manchester Essex 8, Hamilton-Wenham 4: Ava Day went 2-for-3 with a double and Mia Broyles drove home two runs but the Generals (5-6) couldn’t recover after the Hornets plated seven runs in the bottom of the first. Molly Bransford limited M-E to two hits and fanned four over the last four frames.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Hamilton-Wenham 19, Essex Tech 5: Janelle Dalton led Essex Tech (4-7) offensively with a pair of goals, with Morgan Costa adding one goal and one assist. Sophia Goudreau and Sydney Mace also scored while Thais Dos Santos picked up an assist.
Newburyport 10, Ipswich 9: The Tigers were edged in a clash of state powerhouses. Allie Wile’s three goals and two more from Lucy Winthrop helped propel the offense. Lyla Greenleaf added a goal and one assist, with other goals coming from Ella McCarthy, Jayne Krause and Ella Schofield.
BOYS LACROSSE
Pingree 13, Northfield Mt. Hermon 6: Finley McClintock was again dominant in the draw, capturing 18-of-21 faceoffs to help the Highlanders (11-1) win their 11th straight contest. Goalie Max Becker turned aside six shots in the win, with goals coming from Pingree teammates Connor O’Neil (3), Jake Hiltz (3), Nick Donovan (2), Quinn Donovan (2), Christian Renaud (2) and Wyatt Langway. Henry Card (2), O’Neil (2), Matt Tersolo, Charlie Cunningham, Hiltz and Nick Donovan all added assists.
North Andover 13, Marblehead 4: The Magicians fell behind early and, while fighting hard the entire way, couldn’t quite claw back into it. James Achterhof scored twice, Will Sullivan and Ben Zamansky each had one, Reece Moore had three assists and Owen Dulac one. Colin Maniaci had a strong game between the pipes, finishing with 14 saves for Marblehead (now 5-5).
BOYS TENNIS
Marblehead takes two from Masconomet: The Magicians completed a 5-0 sweep in a match that had been cut short by thunderstorms back on April 15, then won the regularly scheduled match 4-1. Senior tri-captain Etan Farfel won his two matches (6-4, 6-2, and 5-7, 5-3 (default)) at first singles. Fellow senior tri-captain Jayden Janock won the opener at third singles (6-1, 7-6 (7-5) before junior T.J. Kelly did the same in the nightcap (6-1, 6-0). Tri-captain Matthew Sherf won his first match at second singles, 6-2, 6-4, but had to default in the rematch with Masconomet’s Arjun Shrejakar, 6-2, 2-6, due to injury.
Marblehead won all four doubles matches as well. Anthony Vizy and Ty Cooper prevailed 6-0, 6-2 before Cooper teamed with Janock in the second match to capture a 6-0, 6-0 decision. Austin Bacon and Kelly won at second doubles, 3-0 (default by injury) in the opener, then Alex Boehning and Baker took care of business, 6-0, 6-2.
BASEBALL
Pingree 15, Middlesex 3: Jimmy Keck went 3-for-3 and Calvin Zimmerman had three RBI as Pingree (7-3) won its fourth in a row. Dan Ferris also had three RBI, Mateus Fieck and Aidan Horgan both had two hits with two RBI and Cole Piaseczynski scored three times. Cole Reeves was credited with the win, fanning four in three innings.
Rockport 4, Ipswich 1: Ethan Boleski threw two innings for scoreless relief for Ipswich (3-7), but the Tigers managed just two hits in the road loss. Brady Merry had one of those hits and scored and Peter Mooradd had the other.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Salem State 7, MCLA 0: Jake Boucher threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing only two his and fanning seven, and Nick Bamforth struck out three of the five batters he got out to seal the shutout for the Vikings (16-15). Boucher helped himself with an RBI while Beverly native Nick McIntyre had an RBI double, Ethan Stepputtis stroked a triple and Nolan Currier doubled and had two RBI.
