PLATTSBURGH — It was a pitcher’s duel on Thursday afternoon between Saranac Lake’s Alius Martelle and Plattsburgh High’s Dan Hartmann.
The Hornets emerged with a 3-1 victory in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference play, scoring single runs in the first, second and third innings.
Hartmann went the distance for the win as he struck out 14, walked four and allowed five hits.
Martelle, meanwhile, pitched six innings. Martelle fanned five, walked three and surrendered just two hits.
“Bryan (Munn) had his team ready to play today,” PHS coach Pat Shaughnessy said. “The Martelle kid threw a heck of a game for them today. He threw strikes and their defense made every play behind him.
“Danny came up big for us. He threw a great game when we needed it.
“I was happy with how we manufactured runs today against a quality opponent. I feel like we are starting to click now at a good time of the season. We have younger players stepping up and succeeding in bigger roles.”
The Red Storm’s Ethan Knight was the only player in the game with two hits.
“Knight had a good game at the plate,” Shaughnessy said. “He hit the ball hard each time he was up.”

“We did a good job defensively to get out of two jams by turning inning-ending double plays,” Saranac coach Robby Knowles said. “Champagne gave us a quality start and Macomber did a really good job in relief.
“(Robbie) Squier made a nice play tracking a ball down deep in the right-center gap. If he doesn’t get to the ball, they take the lead.
“We had a couple of timely hits and ran the bases well.”
