LAVALE — A Maryland State Police trooper remained hospitalized Tuesday, a day after he was struck by a vehicle while conducting traffic enforcement on Interstate 68.
The accident occurred about 1 p.m. in the west lanes near the 39-mile marker, a police spokesperson said Monday via email.
The trooper was flown by Trooper 5, a state police medevac helicopter, to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment of unspecified injuries.
“This crash is still under investigation,” the spokesperson said Tuesday. “Our trooper remains at Shock Trauma where he is receiving medical treatment.”
Neither the injured trooper nor the motorist who hit him have been identified. The motorist stayed at the scene, police said.
“We are grateful to our fellow law enforcement agencies, first responders, and members of our community, who have reached out with prayers, messages of support, and well wishes for one of our own …” read a message posted to the Cumberland Barrack’s Facebook page Tuesday afternoon. “Moments like these are a powerful reminder of the risks law enforcement faces each day in service to others.”
A second accident occurred about 1:25 p.m. in the east lanes at the 38-mile marker when a tractor-trailer hit multiple stopped vehicles.
Some of the first responders who responded to the first accident left that scene to assist at the second.
