There may be plenty of new faces, but the Newburyport girls lacrosse team is of course still rolling.
The Clippers opened up a substantial halftime lead on Tuesday afternoon, and basically had a running clock the entire second half in a 15-5 victory over “Border Battle” rival Triton. Helping power the win for the undefeated Clippers (4-0) was a trio of athletes scoring their first career goals, as Morgan Sweet, Meredith Boelke and Hayden McCarty all got to celebrate finding the back of the net.
But at the top offensively for Newburyport was Reese Bromby and Amanda Linteris each scoring four goals, and Erin Marshall, Emma MacIsaac, Callie Harris and Amelia Price all scored as well. The Clippers have now outscored their opponents 68-26 over their opening four games, and will look to keep it rolling when they host Hamilton-Wenham on Thursday.
Meanwhile, perhaps Triton found some positive momentum after scoring the final four goals of the game. Despite the final score, captains Meredith Morneau, Alexa Lawrence, Delaney Quinn and Riley McDonald all played well for the Vikings.
Good rebound for Fuller, Clippers
Maybe it was a positive, but the Newburyport boys lacrosse team really didn’t have the time to dwell on the loss.
Following their first setback of the season to a strong Division 1 opponent in Concord-Carlisle on Monday, the Clippers were right back out on the road to take on rival Triton just a day later. So really, they had no choice but to put that loss in the rearview mirror. And the Clippers would rebound in a big way, rolling to a resounding 19-1 victory over the Vikings.
Senior captain Colin Fuller had a big game with six goals and an assist, and Davis Pons was right behind him with four goals along with a helper. Junior attack Carter Scott netted another hat-trick, and Henry Waddell, Jack Sullivan, Worth Green, Asher Kinsey, Will Caron and Kian Markos all scored as well. Both Waddell and Sam Craig had three assists, and also adding helpers was Luke MacIsaac (2), Sullivan, Jack Miller and Eli Sirota.
Newburyport (5-1) will next travel up to Hamilton-Wenham on Thursday.
Georgetown on wrong end of no-hitter
Unfortunately, the shoe was on the other foot for the Georgetown baseball team.
During their record-breaking season a year ago, the Royals tossed three no-hitters with plenty of other games where they held opponents to less than five base knocks. But there are a bunch of new faces this spring, and on Tuesday, the Royals were on the other end of a five-inning, no-hit effort in a 10-0 setback up at Lynnfield.
Shawn Riley and Rex Nadeau got through the innings on the mound for the Royals (2-2), who will look to get back on track when they host Essex Tech on Thursday with a 4 p.m. first pitch.
Pitching has rough night, offense still cold for Amesbury
The Amesbury baseball team is still searching for answers following a 10-4 loss over at Essex Tech on Tuesday. On the mound the Redhawks (0-5) allowed runs in all but one inning, while at the plate they benefited from some errors while only mustering two hits themselves.
Joe Celia went 1-for-2 with two RBI, while Logan Genualdo went 1-for-3 and drove in the team’s other two runs as part of a four-run sixth inning. Amesbury will look to get into the win column when it hosts Triton on Thursday at 4 p.m.
