The Dalton Amateur Radio Club is participating in the National Association for Amateur Radio’s annual Field Day Saturday, setting up at Lakeshore Park during the morning around 10:30.
The association’s Field Day is the most popular on-the-air amateur “ham” radio event held annually in the U.S. and Canada. The theme for this year is to go out and “Get Radio Active.” More than 40,000 hams throughout North America will set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio’s science, skill and service to the community and the nation. “Field Day is ham radio’s open house,” club President Greg Williams said. “There is so much to this hobby and we are excited to utilize our skills out in the field and share what we do with the public.”
Field Day combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach and technical skills all in a single event. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933. It remains the most popular event in ham radio.
Amateur Radio Service is a worldwide community of licensed operators using the airwaves with every conceivable means of communications technology. “It’s a hobby where you always are learning new skills, and you being able to transmit voice, data and pictures through the air to unusual places, both near and far, without depending on commercial systems,” said Willams. “Weather permitting, our club plans to set up at one of the pavilions at Lakeshore Park before noon and have radios and antennas broadcasting out to other participants around the country by 1 p.m. Anyone is welcome to come, visit, learn and maybe even try out getting on the air,” Williams said.
