The Ausable River Association (AuRA) held its Fourth Annual Ausable River Clean-up Day to tie in with the celebration of Earth Day.
Starting at over 20 sites, over 100 people fanned out along the roadways and river banks from Keene Valley to Jay and up to Lake Placid to collect trash flung out of vehicle windows by motorists as well as debris left along the river banks by those who may have appreciated the view or fishing, but not the environment.
Among the volunteers was Shannon Shambo and her daughter Liana who in addition to caring about the environment was including the clean-up as part of her public service as a Keene Central School Honor Society student.
In addition to the AuRA, the event was sponsored by the Ironman Foundation, Golden Arrow Resort of Lake Placid, Green Goddess Natural Foods & Cafe of Lake Placid, Keene Valley Grocery and NRS Outdoor Gear.
At the end of the event participants were provided with a lunch and prizes were given to those finding the most unusual trash as well as from random drawings.
AuRa Operations Director Madison Stroud indicated last year’s clean-up garnered over three tons of garbage, and she expects a similar amount this year.
