PLATTSBURGH — Braeden Calkins accounted for six goals and three assists Saturday as Plattsburgh High picked up its first victory of the season with a 10-0 decision over Pearl River in non-league hockey.
“Any time you’re able to score at hat trick, it’s impressive,” PHS coach Joe Tolosky said. “Braeden getting two hat tricks in one game and also being a playmaker with three assists is something special.
“He has been so enjoyable to watch this season and he’s been a leader for us in more ways than just scoring goals.”
James Bayer and Owen Dubay scored their first-career goals for PHS, with Bayer also getting three assists. Chase Laravia and Cooper Holland each added a goal.
Owen Chapple was in net for the Hornets and recorded the shutout with 31 saves.
“We were pleased with our team’s response after a tough loss the night before,” Tolosky said. “It was a total team effort and they were determined to split the weekend.
“Overall, it was a step in the right direction entering the second half of the season. Thanks to Pearl River for making the long trip up to Plattsburgh,”

ROCHESTER — Gates-Chili, also known as the Spartan Hockey Club, jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period in the non-league contest.
“We lost this game in the first period because we came out flat and didn’t work hard,” Saranac coach Robby Knowles said.
“Hopefully, we will learn some lessons and be more responsible to help ourselves be prepared to play.”
Nolan Miner’s goal in the second period cut the Spartans’ deficit to 3-1, but Gates-Chili added two more in the third, one into an empty net.
Miner, who scored four goals on the weekend, closed out the Saranac (5-4-1) scoring with a second left in regulation.
Mason Patnode stopped 34 of 38 shots in the Saranac nets.
“I thought we responded well in the second period,” Knowles said. “We controlled play, but struggled to finish on chances. (Gates-Chili goalie Logan) Swartzenberg was really good in the second period.
“Gates-Chili executed their systems very well and played smart with the lead. They blocked a lot of shots and got up ice quickly when they went on the attack.”

CHURCHVILLE-CHILI 2
ROCHESTER — Landen Duprey accounted for two goals and two assists, Adrian Barnes a goal and four assists and Ashtyn Catlin five assists in the Spartans non-conference win.
Nolan Miner added Evan Patrie each added two goals and an assist, and Landon Giroux a goal and assist.
Shawn McLane got the win in net, stopping 23 of 24 shots in two periods plus.
“We got off to a slow start, but McLane made a couple of big saves on the penalty kill and one on a breakaway to keep the game scoreless,” Saranac coach Robby Knowles said. “Halfway through the first period, we found some energy and finished the period on a better note.
“The start of the second period was similar, but we finished strong and gained separation in the final couple of minutes. I liked that we did a better job getting to the net and having second and third chances. That’s an area where we need to become more comfortable and finishing on our chances.”
