BINGHAMTON — What the Ticonderoga baseball team didn’t need last Friday was a bad start to its NYSPHSAA Class C Final Four semifinal against Kendall.
Unfortunately for the Section VII champions, that’s what happened.
The Section V champion Eagles (25-2) scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 12-2 victory in a game called after 4.5 innings due to the 10-run rule.
Kendall, which would drop a 4-1 decision to defending Class C champion Saratoga Catholic, of Section II, the following day, came into the Ti game riding an 11-game winning streak, allowing only a combined 17 runs.
Falling 6-0 in the opening inning against a team that doesn’t surrender a lot of runs put the Sentinels (14-7) in a huge hole.
It was a rough start for Ticonderoga standout pitcher Jackson Dorsett. The first inning for the Eagles consisted of five hits, two hit batters, two balks and two wild pitches.
Among the hits for Kendall in the opening inning were Andrew Cole’s RBI single, Nic Cole’s RBI double and Andrew D’Agostino’s two-run double.
The Eagles scored in all four innings with three runs in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth.
Vinnie D’Agostino had a one-out triple in the second and scored on Sammy Conte’s single. Jacob Abrams then delivered a two-run double. Jonny Conte added a two-run single in the fourth.
Conte, Andrew Cole and Nic Cole led the Eagles with two hits each. The Eagles totaled 11 hits off three Ticonderoga pitchers.
The Sentinels weren’t without their scoring chances against Kendall ace Nic Cole, who went five innings for the pitching victory. He allowed six hits, walked one and struck out five.
Ticonderoga, trailing by a 9-0 score after two, got two of the runs back in the top of the third.
Brady Mydlarz led off with a single, Eli Dromgool walked, Trevor Blanchard sacrificed the two runners up a base and Parker Davis delivered a two-run single.
Ticonderoga then loaded the bases with one out in the fourth when Owen teRiele and Skyler Frasier reached on errors and Mydlarz got his second hit of the game. But Nic Cole got a strikeout and fielder’s choice to get out of potential harm.
The Sentinels got two-out singles by Rowen Bechtold and Blaek Peters in the fifth only to have Cole get the next batter and end the game.
Mydlarz was the lone Ticonderoga player with two hits. TeRiele added a second-inning double.
Dorsett, Bechtold and teRiele combined to allow 11 hits, walk four and strike out seven in four innings.
Saratoga Catholic advanced to the state title game with Friday’s 5-3 win over Section I’s Tuckahoe. The Class C semifinals and championship were all played at Mirabito Field.
Other state champions crowned Saturday included Massapequa (VIII), 7-1 over Liverpool (III) in Class AAA; West Genesee (III), 4-0 over Cornwall (IX) in Class AA; Averill Park (II), 5-0 over Plainedge (VIII) in Class A; Chester (IX), 3-0 over Medina (VI) in Class B; and Duanesburg, (II) 9-4 over Fillmore (V) in Class D.
Averill Park defeated Peru, and Duanesburg edged Bolton in regional play on their way to winning state titles.
