MOUNT SAVAGE — Firefighters from five counties battled a two-alarm blaze in Mount Savage early Wednesday morning that left two residents displaced.
The fire at 12411 Macs Hill Road was reported just after 2 a.m., according to an Allegany County Joint Communications Center spokesperson.
“Initial reports indicated there may have been two people in the house,” Allegany County Department of Emergency Services Director Roger Bennett said. “When fire department units arrived, Allegany County Sheriff’s Office deputies were on the scene banging on the door trying to get the occupants to the door.”
Firefighters searched the first floor of the residence, but due to safety concerns and loss of the structure, operations became defensive only, with firefighters only working from the exterior, according to Bennett.
Bennett said the occupants were accounted for a short time later.
Units from Allegany and Garrett counties, Mineral County, West Virginia, and Somerset and Bedford counties in Pennsylvania responded, according to the Joint Communications Center.
The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal reported a $100,000 loss to the two-story structure with a basement and its contents.
Investigators confirmed no one was home at the time of the fire.
Approximately 80 firefighters were on scene and had the fire under control in 30 minutes, according to the fire marshal’s initial report.
An excavator was requested to the scene to raze the structure because the extensive damage and safety concerns, Bennett said.
The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation.
A neighbor was evaluated by EMS personnel on the scene but was not transported, according to Bennett.
No other firefighter or civilian injuries were reported.
The American Red Cross was contacted for the two adults displaced by the fire.
