The Cape Ann YMCA is offering a full-tuition scholarship, named for a Gloucester philanthropist, for child care in the fall.
The newly established John H. Byrnes Early Education Full Tuition Scholarship will be granted to the very first awardee for the childcare enrollment period beginning in September. The scholarship application process is now open and closes May 30.
“This scholarship meant the world to me and my family,” Byrnes’ widow, Mollie Byrnes, said. “John’s legacy and passion for the power of education will continue to open doors for generations to come through the opportunities that this fund will generate. Knowing that families will be supported in his honor gives me so much hope.”
The scholarship is funded through an endowed gift from the Byrnes family.
”John Byrnes was a man of generosity, service, a deep commitment to his community, and a friend. His passing left a deep void, but his belief in education and helping others continues to inspire,” YMCA of the North Shore President & CEO Chris Lovasco said. “Through this one-of-a-kind preschool scholarship, his legacy lives on — giving families access to quality early education while assisting parents to prepare for greater success and brighter futures. The YMCA of the North Shore is honored to carry forward his and his beloved wife Mollie’s vision, ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of financial circumstances.”
The John H. Byrnes Early Education Full Tuition Scholarship covers 100% of a family’s tuition costs for the entirety of their child’s enrollment in the YMCA’s early education program — similar to a four-year college scholarship.
This initiative not only supports families in need but encourages parents and caregivers to pursue their own educational and career advancements. The scholarship remains in place regardless of the awardee’s income, ensuring long-term stability for recipients. This approach aligns with the YMCA’s mission to empower families and foster socio-economic mobility.
A transparent selection process, developed in collaboration with the Byrnes family, will be overseen by an independent committee of education professionals, community leaders, and representatives from the endowment fund. Regular monitoring and evaluation will ensure the program’s effectiveness, tracking metrics such as attendance, family engagement, and socio-economic impact. Applicants must be from the Cape Ann area with a child who is at least 2 years old at the time of expected enrollment.
Beyond financial assistance, scholarship recipients will have opportunities to connect through gatherings and mentorship initiatives, strengthening their ties to the YMCA and the community. The long-term goal is for scholarship recipients to become ambassadors for the YMCA’s mission, inspiring future generations through volunteerism and community leadership.
