WRESTLING
Beverly wins Warrior Duals: Joseph Baker, the Panthers’ 165-pounder, went 5-0 and was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler by the coaches at Saturday’s Warrior Duals team tournament at Brookline High, pacing the Orange-and-Black’s winning ways. Beverly defeated Quincy (69-1) in the first round, followed by a second round bye before taking down Brookline (59-20), Waltham (66-6) and Central, R.I. (58-12). In the championship bout, they beat their Northeastern Conference rivals from Gloucester, 41-30.
In addition to Baker’s big day, 190-pounder Jason Knapp was also 5-0, including an 8-6 decision over Gloucester’s Max Thomas after moving up to the 215-pound weight class. Tristan Gold’s five first period pins at 144 lbs. earned him a 5-0 showing as well, while first-year sophomore wrestler Enzo Gois went 3-1 and earned a varsity letter, as did fellow sophomore Brody Lehmann with a pin against Waltham.
Marblehead/Swampscott picks up two: The Black-and-Blue defeated Greater Lawrence, 42-36, and topped Billerica, 52-28, while also falling to Lawrence, 48-32, in a fine day of competition against strong foes. Jaymes Carey, Liam O’Brien and Mason Hinshaw all went 3-0 on the day with other key wins posted by Gavin Lepler, Alejandro Haven and Jayvery Monegro.
St. John’s Prep wins quad meet: The Eagles were dominant in Providence over the weekend, toppling four Rhode Island foes convincingly: 81-0 over North Kingston, 57-21 over Scituate, 59-18 over Toll Gate and 58-19 over the hosts from La Salle Academy.
BOYS HOCKEY
Danvers 5, Peabody/Saugus/Swampscott 5 (OT): Tied at 2-2 after two periods, the Falcons took a 5-3 lead thanks to a natural hat trick from captain Josh Henry with about four minutes to play before the host Tanners rallied to knot things up, and overtime couldn’t determine a winner. Gaven Cooper and Colby Medeiros also scored for DHS (now 2-6-2) while Owen Swanton and Cooper Dunham each had three assists. Other helpers went to Drew Godfried, Seamus Cary and Medeiros. Goalie Cody Standring finished with 29 saves.
Nick Muse had two goals, including the game-tying strike with 27 seconds left in regulation, for Peabody/Saugus/Swampscott (3-5-1). Dom Pappalardo came up big for the hosts, turning aside 44 shots. Demetri Breton, Nathan Palhares and Ryan Frary were the other goal scorers, with assists credited to Cameron Gold (his first career point), Brandon Berone, Jason Rothwell and Zach Hartnett.
Winthrop 2, Masconomet 1: Up by a goal after two periods, the Chieftains (1-7) allowed two 5-on-3 goals against over the final 15 minutes to suffer the defeat. Captain Will Carey scored for Masco, with Brendan Sheehan and Dom Cerundolo assisting. Goalie Jacob Sofronas played well, finishing with 28 saves.
Essex Tech 4, Newburyport 2: Brady Leonard and Anthony Bisenti both had a goal and an assist while Teagan Moreau stopped 19 shots as the Hawks (9-1-1) raced out to a three-goal lead and solidified their place atop the Cape Ann League. Brian DeLiso netted the game winner and Cam Casey also scored for Essex Tech with Jaydan Vargas, Ben Rehal and Riley Sobezenski each adding one assist.
Arlington Catholic 8, Bishop Fenwick 0: Sophomore Jimmy Lyman made 30 saves in net for Fenwick (1-10).
Middlesex 4, Pingree 0: Goaltender Von Larson (16 saves) deserved a better fate as his Highlanders (6-7-1) put 39 shots on net but couldn’t put one home.
Xaverian 2, St. John’s Prep 1: Despite putting 48 shots on net, the Eagles could only beat the Xaverian keeper once and saw their winning streak snapped at four games. Junior Brandon Ward scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season, assisted by Sam Croke and captain Ryan DeLucia, while goalkeeper A.J. Farese had 29 saves.
SWIMMING
Archbishop Williams 100, Bishop Fenwick 60; Sophomore Amelia Gallant and senior captain Hannah Ryan both won two events in Fenwick’s final dual meet of the season. Gallant took first place in the 200 freestyle (2:25) and 500 free (5:39.41), while Ryan did likewise in the 100 free (58.41) and 100 breaststroke (1:17.69). Gallant and Ryan also combined with junior captain Caroline Blatchford and senior Courtney McKenzie to win the 200 free relay (1:56.56) and the 200 free relay (4:24.32), qualifying for sectionals in both.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Masconomet 78, Chelmsford 41: Cruising to their 10th win in 11 games, the Chieftains started the first quarter on fire by exploiting Chelmsford’s 1-3-1 zone and racing out to a 28-2 lead and never looked back. Captain Jimmy Farrell scored 15 points to lead a balanced attack that included 143 points from both Thomas Denton and captain Devin O’Brien, plus nine points from Jamason Vella.
Swampscott 72, Westerly, R.I. 56: Connor Chiarello scored 25 points and Teddy O’Neill added 19 as the Big Blue rolled in the first round of the Hoophall Classic in Springfield. Chase Groothuis added 11 points to the attack and Gabe Tripp had eight for Swampscott.
Haldane, N.Y. 44, Swampscott 36: The Big Blue fell to 7-3 on the season after dropping the Hoophall Classic final Sunday morning.
MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Endicott 104, Hartford 100 (OT): Marcus Montagnino of Gloucester turned in just the second triple-double in Gulls’ men’s basketball history — and the first in regulation only — by finishing with a career high 33 points to go with 11 rebounds and 13 assists. Elijah Kinney added 18 points and 14 rebounds for Endicott (9-6) and Drew Brown also had 18 points in the victory.
Salem State 76, MCLA 70: Nicholas Martinez scored 22 points and grabbed six steals and the Vikings (5-11) picked up a conference win at home. Tyrese Rho had a nice shooting outing with 16 points, Omri Merryman scored 13 and Jarnel Snow provided a spark off the bench with 10.
Roger Williams 110, Gordon 82: Alex Daniel had 21 points, Bryce Smith 13 and Sean Quanico a dozen to go with six assists, but the Scots (6-9) couldn’t slow down the red-hot visitors offensively.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Salem State 1, Southern Maine 0: Delaney Cox stopped all 37 shots she saw to earn her first shutout and victory of the season as Salem State (5-12 overall) grabbed its first conference win as well. Ginger Osgood broke the scoreless tie with only 5:55 left in regulation, assisted by Ava Calabria and Isabella Gillis.
Endicott 4, Curry 0: Casey Moritz pitched a road shutout by turning aside all 27 shots she faced, giving the Gulls their 13th win in 17 contests. Rivers Morris and Teaghan Hall both had a goal and an assist for the winners, with other tallies coming from Ella Rago and Jo Wimler.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Endicott 68, Hartford 62: Behind 20 points and five assists off the bench by Emma Shinney, Endicott (10-5) closed on a 17-5 fourth quarter run to rally after trailing by as many as six in the final frame. Tenley Wallin added 17 points for the winners and Libby Fleming chipped in with 12.
Roger Williams 86, Gordon 54: The Scots (5-10) managed just 19 second half points in the CNE setback. Ami Rivera and Brynn Barnhard tied for the team lead in points with a dozen each.
MEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Anna Maria 5, Salem State 1: The Vikings (9-5) saw their six game win streak snapped with a second period goal by Carson St. James being the only time they lit the lamp despite putting 37 shots on the net.
