GYMNASTICS
Beverly 132.85, Essex Tech 123: Carli Moran of the Panthers stood atop the podium in all four events and won the all-around (37.75) to give the Orange-and-Black and Sunday morning triumph. Moran scored a 9.75 on vault, 9.6 on the uneven bars, 9.5 on balance beam, and 8.9 on floor exercises. Teammate Fiona Bazin was third in the AA (31.0), highlighted by finishing second on vault (8.6) and third on bars (7.6). Maddy St. Pierre added a second on bars (7.9) for Beverly, as did Lilly Pelletier on beam (8.6), while Savannah Hathaway took third on floor (8.1).
Essex Tech’s Amina Benchain wound up in second place in the all-around (31.85) after placing second on floor (8.2) and third on both vault (8.55) and beam (8.1).
Hamilton-Wenham 140.85, Peabody 83.9: In a losing effort, the Tanners got strong performances from Molly Hagerty (7.5 on floor) and Ella Walsh (8.2 on vault). Margaret Shaker, Megan Babiarz and Katrina Carmack also put together solid routines.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Masconomet 3, Gloucester 1: Sophomore Gabby Chiulli made 28 saves and Masconomet (4-7) survived three third period penalties to win at Talbot. Seniors Madie Dupuis and Bella Malloy had a goal and an assist each and senior defenseman Elizabeth Shoemaker also lit the lamp. Collecting assists were Kayleigh LeColst (two) and Ella Bevilacqua.
Portsmouth Abbey 3, Pingree 0: Piper Davekos was spectacular for the Highlanders, stopping 64 shots in her team’s setback. One of those goals came on the power play.
Newburyport 6, Marblehead 0: The Lady Headers (3-8-1) were blanked on the road in NEHL action.
Auburn 2, Bishop Fenwick 0: The Crusaders celebrated seniors Lexi Salah, Reagan Van Horn, Karissa Burgess, Noella Miserandino and Taylor Gallant on Senior Night, but dipped to 3-7-1 with another tough offensive showing (being shut out for the sixth time in 11 outings).
BOYS HOCKEY
Beverly 8, Peabody/Saugus/Swampscott 0: Junior Ty Chin-Aleong made 21 saves for his first career shutout while teammate Coby Malionek finished with a hat trick as the Panthers (6-4-2) snapped a three-game winless streak. Henry Mills and Logan Bowen each had a goal and an assist; Teddy Fisher, Alex Alexeyev and Matthew Rex also scored; and additional assists went to Mikey O’Leary (2), Casey Chirco, Ryan Everett, Colby Kaszynski and Andrew Willington (a JV callup who earned his first varsity point).
Senior netminder Evan Tybinkowski turned aside 27 shots in net for the Tanners (now 4-5-1).
Marblehead 4, Masconomet 3: Teddy Dulac had a three-point night, including a pair of goals, as a hard forecheck helped the Headers (2-8-1) win their second straight game and run their unbeaten streak to three games. Three of their goals came off of turnovers as Holden Ferreira and Ryan Frary also lit the lamp for the winners. Bowden Laramie earned the victory with 21 saves, including seven big ones in the final period.
Freshmen Joe Ingalls and Cole Smith-Beaver (his first varsity point) had goals for the Chieftains (now 2-10), with junior Thomas Finn adding his seventh of the season. Captain Brendan Sheehan, Tim McManus, Ben Miga and Ingalls each had one assist, and goalie Nico Santosuosso finished with 15 saves.
Amesbury 5, Essex Tech 4 (OT): Despite a pair of goals from sophomore Ryan Wilson and one each from Jake Swencki and Cam Casey, the Hawks (8-4-1) were upset on the road. Brian DeLisio, Tyler McHugh and Casey all had assists in the setback, in which Essex Tech rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period to send it to overtime. Logan Prifti came on in relief in net and stopped 15-of-16 shots.
GIRLS SWIMMING
St. Mary’s Lynn 79, Bishop Fenwick 72: Senior captain Caroline Blatchford had a spectacular meet for the Crusaders, qualifying for sectionals after winning the 100 butterfly (1:07.15) while also finishing first in the 200 IM (2:26.04) and also being part of two winning relays. Freshman Katie Kelley was victorious in the 100 backstroke (1:24.44). Fenwick’s 200 medley relay team of Blatchford, sophomore Riley Moran, Webber and fellow freshman Lucy Webber won in 2:21.78; the same quartet captured top honors in the 200 free relay (2:02.91) as well.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Worcester South 55, Bishop Fenwick 43: Captain Caitlin Boyle had 17 points with six rebounds but a fourth quarter run by Worcester handed Fenwick (10-2) just its second loss of the season. Captain Celia Neilson scored 14 and had eight rebounds and junior Abby Jenkins had seven points and two steals.
Pingree 47, St. Paul’s 41: Shauna O’Brien scored a team-best 14 points, hitting four 3-pointers in the process, plus four rebounds and three assists to give the Highlanders a solid road triumph. Rayana Laurent produced 13 points and six rebounds of her own, while Sara Graves added 10 points and five assists.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Pingree 69, Kents Hill 56: Jordan Maxson scored 33 and Chris Condon added 11 as the Highlanders rallied from 18 points down to score an impressive win over their foes from Maine.
BOYS TRACK
Hawk sprinters shine: At the State Coaches Invitational, Essex Tech’s 4×200 relay placed second overall and Makaio Bey also earned third place in the dash (6.51) while placing tenth in the long jump.
Marblehead, Peabody grab thirds: Magician Clark Roszell took third overall in the high jump at the state coaches invitational, clearing 6-feet-4-inches. In the same meet, Peabody’s Mohamed Lhassouani was third in the 1000 with a time of 2:36.75 and Osama Mishal was 13th in the 600 (1:25). In other results, Ben White of Swampscott was 14h in the shot put with a throw over 46 feet.
Medalists for SJP: St. John’s Prep’s Henry McDonnell came in third in the mile at the state coaches invitational with a time of 4:21 and Leo Emerson also made the podium by coming in fourth in the hurdles (7.79). Jack McIntosh was 8th in the 2-mile (9:33) and Ethan Caulfield placed eight in the shot put (49-10).
State Freshman/Sophomore meet: From Peabody, Zaiden Nazaire was 11th in the shot put (39-9) among the top 9th and 10th graders statewide and St. John’s Prep’s Will Figulski was 12th (also 39-9). Also from the Eagles, Garrett Dodge placed 11th in the 600 and DJ Graham was 10th in the dash.
GIRLS TRACK
State Coaches Invitational: At Reggie Lewis on Saturday in the state coaches invite, Bishop Fenwick’s Addie Sweatman was 13th in the seeded 2-mile (11:54). Marblehead’s Mari O’Connell was tenth in that race (11:38) while the Magicians’ 4×400 placed sixth and Lucy Flynn was 12th in the 300. From Swampscott, Annabelle Averett came in 17th in the mile (5:24).
Peabody shines: At the Freshman/Sophomore Meet at the Reggie Lewis Center, Ella Braz took second in the mile (5:27.21), Lauren Foley was third in the 1000 (3:04.61), Avani Ingham took fifth in the 300 (43.41) and Clare Welton was also fifth in the shot put (30 feet 3 inches) to lead a terrific team effort. Additionally, Lily Murphy, McKenzie Miller and Lilah Trombley ran person bests in a very competitive field.
WRESTLING
Eagles win four: St. John’s Prep took down Marlborough (66-16), Franklin (54-21), West Springfield (55-16) and Southwick (69-4) in a solid day. Collin Vitale (106), Ben Schumacher (126), Graham Conway (132), Boden Dormer (138), Jimmy Lally (144), Will LaVallee (150), Charlie Poor (165) Bryant Mason (190/215) and Joe Irzyk (285) all went undefeated on the day.
Pentucket 48, Salem 24: Three wrestlers for the Witches earned pinfalls as Caden Tran picked up a victory at 120 pounds, Connor Buckley did likewise at 138 lbs., and Fisnik Gilaj was victorious at 195 lbs.
Marblehead/Swampscott wins two, drops one: At the Tri-State Cup duals, the Black & Blue defeated both Pelham, N.H. (480-35) and York, Maine (48-30) before falling to host Triton (48-34), all despite being down two starting wrestlers. Captains Liam O’Brien and Colin Hart had wins in all three of their bouts, as did Phineas Jakious and Andrew Delisle. Trevor Wade earned his first varsity win on the day and finished with two, as did teammate Nolan Glass. Single victories came from Kenny Drolette, Platon Danshyn, Dylan Soule, Phil Duclos, Max Letwin and Xavier Tejada.
MEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Endicott 5, Roger Williams 2: Collin Kleiser scored the first two goals of the game and the No. 7 ranked Gulls (13-2-2) celebrated Senior Day with a home win. Anthony Cafarelli, Therien Thiesing and Kyle Furey also scored, Jack Costanzo had a pair of assists and Peter Sterling stopped 11 shots.
Salem State 3, Westfield State 3 (SSU wins in shootout): Landyn Greatorex and Eric Whitelaw cashed in on their shootout chances, sparking the Vikings (4-11-3) to a win on their Rockett Arena ice. Ryan Barrett, Zach Dill and Carson James all scored in regulation for the winners, who got 35 saves from netminder Will Nepveu.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Endicott 2, Curry 0: Ella Rago’s second period goal stood up as the winner for the No. 11 Gulls (13-4-1) and Cammi Ahern added a power play tally in the third for insurance. Lauren Ferrari stopped 15 shots in net to the post the shutout.
Salem State 4, Rivier 3 (OT): Beau Boudreau scored at 2:25 of overtime to lift the Vikings (7-10-1) after Talia Martucci tied it up with a power play goal with only 57 seconds left in regulation. Addie Mcaughey and Amanda Beaty also scored for Salem State, which rallied after trailing 2-0 and got a superb 36 save effort from Delaney Cox.
MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Westfield State 87, Salem State 65: Tyrese Rho gave the Vikings 16 points but they couldn’t keep pace with the Owls in a MASCAC setback. Michael Makiej added 13 for the Vikings, now 9-8.
Suffolk 79, Gordon 51: Thirteen points and nine rebounds from Ryan Brooks, as well as 11 points from Alex Daniel, ultimately couldn’t save the Scots (6-12) in a road defeat.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Westfield State 80, Salem State 75: Maria Orfanos had 20 points, five steals and four assists and Salem State (8-9) nearly pulled off the upset by coming alive in the fourth quarter. First-year Shakera Fullenwilder provided a huge life off the bench with 16 points.
Suffolk 73, Gordon 49: Woynitu Ciccarello scored 16 points for the Scots (4-14) to go along with four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
