Marblehead captures 26th straight NEC crown: At Saturday’s Northeastern Conference Championship Meet, the Magicians’ boys and girls teams finished with more than 1,000 combined points to claim their 26th straight league title. Iam Chemel won the 100 backstroke (57.57) and 500 freestyle (5:14.91) for the boys, with Cade Nelson capturing both the 200 IM (2:07.64) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.55). Brady Leveroni (200 free, 1:51.11), Omar Elnabaraway (100 fly, 56.02), Orion Lewis (51.31) and the 400 free relay team of Leveroni, Nelson Elnabaraway and Lewis (3:25.68) were all first place finishers. Ivan Monin added a second place in diving.
The Marblehead girls got nine first place finishes behind wins from Winnie Waddington in the 50 free (24.83) and 100 fly (1:00.44), Grace Ladouceur in the 200 IM (2:14.26) and 100 free (54.16), Hazell Wright in the 100 backstroke (1:00.65) and 200 free (1:58.10), Shaelyn Callahan in the 500 free (5:35.57) and 100 breast (1:14.14), and the 400 free relay team of Waddington, Grace Ladouceur, Callahan and Wright (3:43.42, a 10-second drop from their previous best time). Additionally, senior Monica Pechhold had a state qualifying time of 1:16.52 in the 100 breaststroke; Macy Ladouceur was second in both the 100 fly (1:02.27) and 500 free (5:47.23), and Claire Burke (3rd), Hailey Gilmore (4th) and Callie Gilmore (6th) all did well in diving.
Fenwick girls takes fourth at Buckwell Memorial meet: Having the smallest team in the Catholic Central League didn’t deter the Bishop Fenwick girls from taking fourth place out of seven teams at the meet named for their former head coach, the Cara A. Buckwell Memorial CCL Championships in Dartmouth. The Crusaders, who finished with 160 points, got first place finishes from Caroline Blatchford in the 200 free (2:02.68) and 100 free (56.40), a first place in 1 meter diving from junior Sarah Shann, who qualified for North Sectionals and Division 1 states; and a third place showing from the medley relay team of Blatchford, freshman Lucy Webber, sophomore Riley Morin, and freshman Katie Kelly (2:19.85).
BOYS TRACK
SJP wins Catholic Conference: With 150 points, St. John’s Prep won the Catholic Conference meet title Friday night. The Eagles had three individual league champs in senior Leo Emerson (high hurdles, 78.5), junior Tyson Stroope (high jump, 6-foot-4) and junior Ethan Caulfield (50-feet-5-inches). Other high scorers were Dayvian Sullivan (2nd, dash), Colton Hayhurst (2nd, 600), Mateo DeOrio (3rd, 1000) and Henry McDonnell (2nd, 2-mile). The Eagles also won gold in two of the three relays as Andrew McManmon, Quinten Murray, Will Quigley and Ahmir Hykel won the 4×200 and Jack McIntosh, Hunter Opal, Liam Mahoney and DeOrio won the 4×800.
BOYS HOCKEY
Peabody/Saugus/Swampscott 7, Somerville 1: Sophomore defenseman Cam Gold and junior forward Mason Palladino each scored their first varsity goals as the Tanners (5-7-1) rolled on the road. Linemates John Morello (goal, 3 assists) and Jake Kelly (2 goals, also had big games, with Artie O’Leary and Matthew Scopa also scoring. Jason Rothwell (2), Brandon Barone, Mason Laine, Demetri Breton and Coby Cook (his first varsity point) contributed assists. Evan Tybinkowski earned the win with 20 saves.
Danvers 1, Winthrop 1 (OT): Goaltender Evan Morey made 32 saves, including a big breakaway stop with 30 seconds remaining, to help the Falcons (6-7-2) secure a point on the road. Defenseman Jacob Langlais scored in the first period for Danvers, with assists from Cooper Dunham and Owen Swanton.
Pingree 4, Brewster 1: Chris D’Alleva scored twice and goalie Max Levine-Stein made 22 saves over 54 minutes to put the Highlanders (9-6-3) back in the win column. Nate Daly got things started with his first varsity goal and chipped in with two assists. Drew Gallucci also converted for the winners, who got three helpers from Liam Miga and one apiece from captain Danny Patch and D’Alleva.
Nauset 4, Essex Tech 2: The defending Division 3 state champions from Cape Cod scored three straight goals following an early 1-0 Essex Tech lead and skated home with a win. Captain Brian Delisio and freshman Braydon Connors had the Hawks’ tallies and goalie Teagan Moreau was busy throughout, stopping 34 shots. Ryan Wilson, Cam Casey, Andrew Glidden and Delisio each added one assist.
Gloucester 3, Masconomet 0: Making his first varsity start, sophomore goalie Jackson Yespy made 22 saves for the Chieftains (now 2-13).
Arlington Catholic 4, Bishop Fenwick 0: Despite a terrific 43-save performance from goalie Jackson Phillips, the Crusaders (6-9) were unable to keep the host Cougars off the scoreboard completely.
Methuen 5, Marblehead 2: Just 12 hours after finishing a game on Saturday night, the Headers (3-10-1) played again Sunday morning and ran out of gas in the third period. First time varsity starter Evan O’Connor was immense in making 33 saves on 37 shots for Marblehead, with EJ Wyman and Ryan Frary scoring goals for his club.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Beverly 6, Marblehead 2: Meredith Johnson rifled home four goals, including the eventual game-winner, propelling the Panthers (12-3) to a home victory. Avery LeBlanc finished with a goal and one assist, with Phoebe Allen also scoring. Asuka Keough (2), Zoie Abell, and captains Morgan Linskey and Ashley Freitas all had assists for the winners, who got 14 stops in net from Avery Mason.
Marblehead (3-9-1) saw Gwen Potter and Addie Copeeps tally and Emilia Russo and Cassie Aceto earn assists. Goalkeeper Nola Ferraresso was extremely busy, turning aside 38 shots.
Winthrop 4, Masconomet 1: Kayleigh LeColst’s first period goal assisted by Madie Dupuis helped the Chieftains (4-9) battle the Vikings even through two periods before Winthrop netted three in the third. Sophomore Gabby Chiulli had a strong game in net, making 30 saves.
Archbishop Williams 4, Bishop Fenwick 1: Reese Robillard lit the lamp for the Crusaders (3-9-1) with assists from Bella Marcinkowski and Kailey Tinkham and freshman Stella Madarese had another strong outing in net with 40 saves.
GYMNASTICS
Winthrop 135.9, Beverly 133.15: Four more first place finishes by Carli Moran on vault (9.7), bars (9.4), beam (9.7) and floor (9.25) enabled her to once again capture the all-around with a score of 38.05 as the Panthers were shaded by their NEC rivals. Fiona Bazin and Olivia Durand both tied for third place on vault (8.7), with Bazin also scoring 7.8 on beam and 8.0 on floor while Durand scored a 7.8 on bars and 8.1 on floor. Additionally, Beverly’s Maddy St. Pierre recorded an 8.4 on vault and 7.85 on bars.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Peabody 58, Bishop Fenwick 47: Junior Mark Mendonca had 18 points with five rebounds and the Tanners (4-11) split the season series with their crosstown rivals. Dom Domenici added 12 points with three assists, Jeremiah Agbonavbare scored 11, Jeremiah Gerard added eight and Thad Broughton netted seven with six rebounds and four assists.
Charlie Sebuma paced Bishop Fenwick with 15 points and Vince Finnochio scored a dozen.
Lynn Classical 71, Swampscott 58: The host Big Blue (now 11-3) were outscored 29-7 in the second quarter by the Rams, leading to a rare defeat this season. Connor Chiarello had 15 points and five rebounds and was one of four Swampscott players in double figures. He was joined by Mike Lutko (15 points), Teddy O’Neill (14 points, 4 steals) and Chase Groothuis (12 points, 6 rebounds).
Essex Tech 84, Academy of Notre Dame 62: The Hawks had five different players score in double figures while improving to 8-5 on the season. Senior captain Antonio Ceruolo led the way with 19 points, junior captain Jack Hanchett added 16, senior Brodie Guthrie had 12, and both sophomore Carter Goehlert and freshman Jaysean Cejour had 10 points apiece.
St. John’s Prep 62, Wachusett 48: The Eagles were rewarded for their hard work with a non-conference victory.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Dracut 69, Beverly 54: Riley MacDonald had 17 points along with 12 rebounds and Infinity Burns scored nine with 11 boards but the Panthers dipped to 3-12.
MEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Endicott 7, Wentworth 0: A night after going to OT with the same opponent, the No. 7 ranked Gulls (14-3-2) blasted their foes with 62 shots on goal. Louie Kamienski scored twice to lead the onslaught while Kyle Furey and Collin Kleiser had a goal and an assist each. Peter Sterling saw only 16 shots in the shutout win.
Anna Maria 3, Salem State 1: Aren Francis gave Salem State (5-11-3) an early lead but Anna Maria had it tied after two and scored the winner just 63 seconds into the third. Will Nepveau stopped 30 of 32 for the Vikings with the final goal coming on an empty net.
MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Endicott 90, Nichols 78: The No. 15 ranked Gulls (18-1) won their 12th straight game thanks to Caden Sullivan’s career high of 28 points. Elijah Kinney added 15 along with 17 rebounds and Cam Keliher chipped in with 14 off the bench.
Salem State 86, Anna Maria 81 (OT): Raheim Orleans scored six of his 12 points in OT, where Salem State had a 17-12 edge to win the contest. Ali Barry had a team-high 22 for SSU (11-8) while Tyrese Rho scored 17 including some momentous buckets in the extra session.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Salem State 1, Anna Maria 1: Delaney Cox made 27 saves and Isabelle Besser scored the only goal of the shootout as Salem State (5-10-2) grabbed the extra point on the road. Besser also assisted on Emily Schneider’s first period goal that had the squads tied up at one each after regulation.
Endicott 3, Suffolk 1: Gracyn Currle had a pair of goals and the No. 11 ranked Gulls (15-4-1) made it a weekend sweep of the Rams. Ava Schmidt collected two assists for Endicott, Topsfield native Maddie DiNardo had one and Lauren Ferrari made 21 saves to post her 10th win of the season.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Endicott 61, Nichols 40: Emma Shinney had 15 points and nine assists and Tricia Wladkowski scored 11 while grabbing 16 rebounds to power the Gulls (12-7 overall) to a CNE victory.
Anna Maria 71, Salem State 59: Rockport native Kylie Schrock scored 22 to lead the Vikings, but Anna Maria had too much firepower. Ernidia Goncalves also scored in double figures with 14 while pulling down 11 rebounds and coming up with five steals.
MEN’S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
Gulls drop two: Endicott played two nationally ranked teams, falling to No. 13 ranked Wentworth, 3-2, and being swept by No. 12 New Paltz State. In the Wentworth match, Aidan Iocovelli had 12 kills for Endicott (1-2), which won the third and fourth sets to force the tiebreaker.
