BASEBALL
Gloucester 17, Northeast Metro Tech 4 (5 innings): The Fishermen rolled to 6-0 on the season behind another stellar pitching performance from sophomore Nico Alves, who struck out eight batters in the win. Leading the offense was Charlie Amero and Brayden Francis, who mashed back to back monster home runs. Nolan Aiello went 3-for-4 at the plate while Matt Smith was 3-for-3. Lukas Albano, Austin Bouchie, Cade Cooper, Andrew Cribbs, Michael Marino, Giacomo Martell, Jaylen Severino and Alves all added hits; Gloucester had 16 total hits in the shortened five-inning contest. The Fishermen are back in action on Monday at home to take on Beverly at 11 a.m.
Rockport 5, Manchester Essex 2: After Manchester opened the game by scoring a run in the top of the first inning, Rockport (now 2-5) responded by plating four runs and taking the lead for good in the bottom half of the frame. Ben Guarino had two hits, including a double, an RBI and a run scored in the win while Warren Adams knocked in two runs on one hit while scoring as well. Christian Gallagher and Gabe Gallagher each had knocks as well, with Josiah Whitley and Pat Reardon adding one hit apiece. Brady Murray went the distance on the mound, striking out five and walking two while allowing two earned off eight total hits. Rockport returns to the diamond on Tuesday at Amesbury for a 10 a.m. first pitch.
For Manchester Essex (1-4), Adam McLeod went 2-for-3 to lead the charge offensively, while Mike Harris and Nick Glass each had one RBI. Kevin Heim, Connor St. Laurent, Nick Brown and Parker Woodman all added one hit. The Hornets will take on Georgetown at home on Tuesday (12:30 p.m. start).
SOFTBALL
Gloucester 5, Georgetown 3: Fishermen freshman pitcher Abby Noble tossed a complete game with 11 strikeouts, forcing Georgetown to leave nine runners on in scoring position as her team moved to 8-0 on the year. Offensively, Aleena Brown went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI while Laila Ciarmitaro had two RBI including a two-out, suicide squeeze in the sixth inning to give Gloucester the lead. Mackayla Allen was stellar defensively with runners in scoring position. Gloucester will look to keep the good times rolling when it travels to Peabody on Monday for a 10 a.m. start.
BOYS LACROSSE
Gloucester 6, Salem 3: The Fishermen (2-4) snapped a four-game losing skid behind a 16-save performance from goalie Jaeden Chipperini. Chipperini made some clutch saves after his team fell behind 3-2. Sam Sanfilippo led the offense by dishing out four assists and picking up seven ground balls while Finn Costa and Mateo Siero each scored twice. Will Linn and Tanner Smith (first career varsity goal) had the other goals. Connor Mahoney played a great game both ways and added an assist to boot. Gloucester will aim to keep its winning ways alive when it takes on Peabody at home on Monday afternoon (4:30 p.m.).
GIRLS TENNIS
Ipswich 3, Manchester Essex 2: Sarah Cort won her second singles match for the Hornets by a 6-0, 6-3 score, while Grace Scarbrough also came out on top at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-4. First singles standout Aurora Linehan (6-3, 3-6, 5-7) and the first doubles team of Nina Zalosh and Maeve McCardle (7-6, 2-6, 3-6) battled hard in marathon three-set setbacks. With the loss, Manchester Essex is now 3-3 overall and is off until Wednesday, April 30 at Bishop Fenwick.
