INDOOR TRACK
All-New England honors for Bey, Siewko: At the 38th annual New England Indoor championships held in Boston, Essex Tech’s Makaio Bey came in fifth overall in the dash with an incredible time of 6.49 seconds to earn an All-New England medal. He also ran a leg of the seventh place 4×200 relay with Graeme Dineen, Jacoby Tarasuik and Leland Pagan, who himself finished 13th in the 300.
Masconomet’s Mara Siewko also finished in fifth place in the long jump to take home an All-New England medal, leaping 18-feet-7 1/4 inches.
Beverly’s Myles Gregory finished in 9th place in the hurdles with a time of 7.826 that missed out on the finals by a mere four thousandths of a second.
GYMNASTICS
Masconomet places second at states: Led by senior captain Sarah Aldrich’s first place finishes on vault (9.825), floor (9.80) and beam (9.85), the defending state champion Chieftains placed second at Saturday’s state championships with 144.425 team points, just behind winner Newton North (146.075). Aldrich took fourth in the all-around at 37.475, while teammate Kate Mugge was ninth at 36.000, where she finished tied for third on floor (9.45) and tied for fourth on bars (9.1).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Swampscott 67, Nantucket 61 (OT): The Big Blue trailed by 12 at halftime but locked in defensively to get even and outscored the visitors 12-6 in overtime to advance in the Division 3 playoffs. Coach Jason Knowles lauded Will Rowe’s game-changing defensive effort while senior Connor Chiarello had a game-high 26 points with five steals and Teddy O’Neill had 25 points with 11 rebounds. Chase Groothuis (11 rebounds) and Michael Lutko had seven points each.
The No. 4 seed Big Blue (17-4) host the Norwell/Falmouth winner in the Round of 16.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Bishop Fenwick 58, Wilmington 27: Senior captain Celia Neilson flirted with a triple double, scoring 23 points to go with six rebounds, six assists and eight steals as the top-seed Crusaders (16-5) took care of business in the Division 3 Round of 32 at home. Senior captain Caitlin Boyle had nine points and nine boards, sophomore Jane Koulopoulos scored eight and Abby Jenkins, Brittney Figulski, and Reese Spurchise all supplied great defense. Fenwick will host Lynnfield in the Sweet 16 this Tuesday night.
Pingree 45, Wheeler 44: Capturing the Eastern Independent League playoff crown in a nailbiter, the Highlanders got 20 points — including four 3-pointers — and four steals from captain Shauna O’Brien, plus 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals out of freshman Rayana Laurent. Also contributing with four points each were captain Evie Roman (10 rebounds, 2 steals), Lulu Ranaldi (7 rebounds) and captain Antonella Najim (7 rebounds, 2 steals).
GIRLS HOCKEY
Bishop Stang 1, Bishop Fenwick 0 (OT): The No. 25 seed Crusaders went toe-to-toe with Stang for the third time this season, losing by an identical score on all three occasions. In this Division 1 playoff battle, Fenwick played outstanding defense behind Lexi Salah, Karissa Burgess and Reagan Van Horn (all seniors) to keep it scoreless after 45 minutes. Freshman Stella Madarese was also amazing in net with 40 saves, but Stang netted the winner in the 4-on-4 first OT to end Fenwick’s season at 7-11-2.
BOYS HOCKEY
Shawsheen 4, Danvers 0: The 21st seeded Falcons battled throughout but couldn’t light the lamp against a stingy fifth seeded Rams squad in a Division 3 second round playoff loss on the road. Evan Morey had 34 saves in net for Danvers (10-10-2), with defenseman Drew Godfried, Jacob Langlais, Aiden Hockney and Hunter DeDominics playing well in front of him. Owen Stanton just missed a breakaway opportunity for DHS, with Cooper Dunham creating several scoring chances of his own.
MEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Endicott 4, Suffolk 1: The No. 7 ranked Gulls (20-3-3) punched their ticket to next weekend’s CNE championship game for the fifth straight season. Jack Costanzo of Gloucester had an assist while Anthony Cafarelli, Michael Casey, Colin Kleiser and Noah Gibbs were the goal scorers. Peter Sterling made 27 saves to earn his 20th win, the first freshman netminder in program history to do so.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Endicott 3, UNE 0: For the fourth time in five seasons, the No. 14 ranked Gulls (20-4-2) host the CNE title game after a semifinal win. Lauren Ferrari made 17 saves for the shutout, Ella Rago netted the game-winner six minutes into the second period and Mackenzie Graham finished with a goal and an assist.
MEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE
Endicott 19, Clark 5: Jason Tumolo and Tommy Tyksinksi scored four times each the Gulls (2-0) cruised in the road victory. Nine players scored for Endicott, including two goals each by Nick Graap, Manny Marshall and Brody MacDonald.
Maine Maritime 16, Gordon 8: The Scots (0-1) were doubled up on the road. Arthur Ryan had a team-high three goals for Gordon and Ryan Long scored once with two assists.
MEN’S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
Endicott 3, Sage 1: The Gulls (10-3) dropped the third set but closed it out in four. Aidan Iacovelli had an incredible night swinging with 19 kills and Jake Laborde added a dozen spikes.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE
Salem State 8, Rivier 6: Jordan Turcotte had a hat trick and the Vikings (1-0) won their season opener on the road. Laura Young scored twice and supplied three assists and Kylee Rich, another Danvers native, also netted a pair while Nora Bradley made 11 saves.
New England College 17, Gordon 4: Hannah Billowz scored twice but Gordon (0-1) fell behind by nine in the early going and couldn’t find any traction.
