SWIMMING
Marblehead 94, Swampscott 78: Senior captain Brinleigh Callahan, who had been injured and unable to swim earlier in the season, made the cut for sectionals in the 500 freestyle, with the Bentley-bound standout winning in 5:58.31 for the unbeaten Magicians (now 5-0). Cale Nelson also had a sectional cut of his own in winning the 200 IM (2:13.31), with Logan Doody making states in the 50 free with his winning time of 22.81. Grace Ladouceur had a strong showing in the 100 free (59.65) for Marblehead, whose 200 free relay team of Omar Elnabaraway, Brady Leveroni, Nelson and Doody missed out on a state cut by 2/100ths of a second, winning in 1:38.55.
WRESTLING
Saugus/Peabody 54, Danvers 21: The Falcons got pins from Logan Jacques, Drew McMahon and Dylan Kinney. Michael Burke also picked up a win for Danvers, earning a 7-4 decision.
St. John’s Prep 54, Malden Catholic 16: The Eagles continued to dominate their Catholic Conference competition.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Essex Tech 70, Salem 21: Thais Dos Santos poured in 23 points to outscore the Witches by herself and lead the Hawks to their fifth win in a dozen contests. Nicole Mwaura and Avery Barteaux both added eight points for Essex Tech, which got an additional six points from Janelle Dalton and five from Bella Santana.
Izzy Leigh, a freshman guard, showcased her talents for Salem, scoring 13 points on 5-for-6 shooting (2-for-2 from 3-point range) while finding her rhythm early and displaying strong leadership. Senior guard Mia Jimenez added five points while showing promises at both ends of the court.
Pingree 37, Newton CD 23: Shauna O’Brien paced the Highlander offense with 17 points, three assists and three steals in a home victory. Lyla Campbell also excelled with 12 points, seven rebounds and a pair of steals for Pingree (6-4), which snapped a three-game losing streak.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Covenant Christian 65, British International 47: Bennett Plosker dropped in 22 points while Isaac Portugal added 10 of his own as the Cougars (now 5-7) rolled to an easy triumph in Peabody. Shepherd Gladden finished with six points and a team-best 15 rebounds in the win, with Dimitrie Farcas (7 points, 8 rebounds) and Theo Ostrowski (11 rebounds) also shining for CCA.
BOYS HOCKEY
St. John’s Prep 4, Malden Catholic 0: Freshman Gavin Anderson’s first varsity goal, a power play rebound tally, proved to be the eventual game-winner as the Eagles improved to 4-1 in the Catholic Conference and 7-2 overall. Junior Christian Coleman, captain Mason Luciano and junior Brandon Ward also lit the lamp for St. John’s Prep, with goalies Nathan Michaud (12 saves in 2 periods) and freshman Jesse Bernardinelli (2 saves) combining for the shutout. Sophomore defenseman Sefton Paradis was a physical presence for the winners all evening as well.
Essex Tech 4, Gloucester 1: Riley Sobezenski earned the Hawks’ ‘Chain’ for his excellent all-around play, helping propel his squad to a road victory at The Tank in Gloucester. Captain Brady Leonard had a goal and two assists while Anthony Bisenti scored once and picked up one helper for Essex Tech (now 11-1-1), which got additional tallies Jaydan Vargas and Tyler McHugh. Michael Cann, Liam Waterman and Cam Casey also had assists in the victory, with Teagan Moreau stopping 14 shots in net.
Pingree 3, Portsmouth Abbey 2: Senior Max Trudel’s tally with two minutes remaining won the game for the Highlanders (7-7-1). Freshman goalie Max Levine-Stein of Salem turned aside 22 shots for the victory, while teammates Kellan Danaher and Sean Foster also scored.
Marblehead 2, Masconomet 1: London McDonald netted his team-leading 10th goal of the season with five-and-a-half minutes to go and the Headers (10-1-1) survived a late Masco power play followed by a 6-on-5 down the homestretch to prevail. Avin Rodovsky, who assisted on McDonald’s goal, also scored, with captain Sean Dolan adding an assist. Goalie Leo Burdge (26 saves) was again strong between the pipes.
Jacob Sofronas played a strong game in net for the Chieftains (1-8), making 19 saves. Colin Driscoll scored for his team, with Preston Abbott assisting.
St. Mary’s Lynn 5, Bishop Fenwick 0: A 43-save performance in net from sophomore goalie Jimmy Lyman couldn’t stop St. Mary’s from scoring four power play goals, dropping the Crusaders to 1-12 on the season.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Peabody 6, Medford 0: Captain Mia Lava had a goal with three assists and senior Shirley Whitmore scored twice with a helper to power the Tanners (9-1-1) on the road. Defenseman Chloe Gromko added a goal and an assist while captain Alexa Pepper and freshman Grace Allen also scored. Defenseman Mikaela O’Driscoll had three assists and senior Alyse Mutti posted her fourth shutout of the year.
Newton North 4, Marblehead 0: The Lady Headers dipped to 3-6 on the year with a road set back.
GIRLS TRACK
Beverly 81.5, Winthrop 4.5: The Panthers met little resistance from their Northeastern Conference foes while improving to 6-2 on the season. Winners for the Orange-and-Black included Grace Williams in the 1000 (3:21), Julia O’Connor in the 600 (48.8), Joseslyn Silva in the 50 dash (6.4) and Katty Kwapniewski in the 300 (48.0).
Danvers 70, Salem 0: The Falcons were perfect in cruising to victory. Taking first place finishes were Tess Ryan (dash), Ella Stefanek (hurdles), Sabina Sturgeon (300), Madyson Danish (600), Paige Sherman (1000), Emily Sullivan (2-mile), Flavia Locilento (high jump), Sabrina Stoney (shot put), and the 4×400 relay (Ryan, Sturgeon, Ava Patch, Olivia Henry).
Masconomet 46, Swampscott 40: Key wins from Mia Marques in the 55 dash (7.8), Elenora Casto in the 55 hurdles (10.3), Piper Testa in the 300 (45.7), Ava Gauvain in the 600 (1:53.3) and the 4×400 relay team (4:33.3) gave the Chieftains a narrow victory.
Ipswich 65, Lynnfield 34: Lily Harper was first in both the dash and 300 and the Tigers (4-0) clinched the CAL Baker dual meet championship for the indoor season. Other winners included Alana Novello (hurdles), Soren Shearer (600), Lucy Winthrop (1000), Bree Doucet (shot put) and the 4×400 and 4×200 relays.
BOYS TRACK
Masconomet 50, Swampscott 36: Colin Moran (55 hurdles, 8.2), Arbri Halilaj (55 hurdles, 6.8), Jack Duvall (300, 39.8), Tim Lull (600, 1:33.4) and Owen Walsh (2-mile, 11:20) each took home first place finishes for the victorious Chieftains.
Swampscott got victories from George Hosking IV in the high jump (5-6), Spencer Reames in the shot put (42-7 3/4), Anthony Colella in the 1000 (2:45.8), Simon Brown in the mile (4:50.5), and its 4×4 relay team (3:54.8).
Beverly 70, Winthrop 16: Charlie Bossler was a double winner by capturing both the 600 and the high jump, enabling the Panthers to improve to 7-1. Other winners for Beverly included Floyd White in the 55, Evan Wong in the 300, Harrison Stanton in the 1000, Chris Mita in the mile, Micah Groff in the 2-mile, and Noah McGoldrick in the shot put.
Lynnfield 53, Ipswich 47: The 4×400 relay of Finn Wright, Will Gromko, Ange Tshibambe and Alex Young prevailed but Ipswich finished the regular season at 2-2. James Dick also won the hurdles, Joe Wertz took the 600 and Young was first in the 1000.
GIRLS SKIING
Marblehead shines: In the Mass Bay Ski League East, Marblehead’s Courtney Hoguet finished third overall in the fourth race of the year at Blue Hills recently. Maggie Svencer came in fifth overall with Courtney Blanche in 16th and Grace Gill coming in 26th out of 80 racers.
BOYS SKIING
Magicians impress: Marblehead’s boys had four racers in the top ten of the Mass. Bay Ski League East’s recent meet at Blue Hills. Tyler Dana led the pack in third place while Thomas Svencer was fourth, Henry Gochman came in sixth and Thomas Sawyer was seventh.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Salem State 103, Worcester State 89: Thanks to five 3-pointers, L.J. Hicks scored 22 points and was one of seven Vikings in double figures as they improved to 3-1 in MASCAC play and 6-11 overall. Tyrese Rho (18 points), Omri Merryman (17 points), Nicholas Martinez (12 points, 6 assists), Steven Jean-Louis (12 points, 4 rebounds), Jarnel Snow (12 points), and Liam Byrne (10 points, 12 rebounds, 5 steals) combined for an excellent team win for Salem State.
Gordon 102, Curry 78: The Scots (7-9) had a tremendous offensive night in the victory with Bernie McGuinness draining six from behind the arc and totaling up 28 points.
Endicott 90, Nichols 85 (OT): Marcus Montagino totaled 30 points and the Gulls (10-6) won the extra session, 17-12, to outlast the Bison on the road. Elijah Kinney also had a great showing with 23 points and Drew Brown chipped in 16.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Gordon 55, Curry 53: Ami Rivera led her team in points (21) and while putting down seven rebounds to give the Scots (now 6-10) an impressive league triumph. Leah McGarvey contributed 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Naomi Nicholson finished with 10 points, and Brynn Barnhard and Sophie Peters had 11 and nine rebounds, respectively.
Endicott 95, Nichols 67: Sarah Dempsey scored 18 points, pulled down a half-dozen rebounds and dished out five assists to help the Gulls roll on the road. Sofia Mazzotta also had a big night with 16 points, seven rebounds and three thefts, while Libby Fleming (15 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and a blocked shot) was also elite for Endicott (now 11-5, 7-2 in the CNE).
Salem State 69, Worcester State 56: All five starters scored in double figures for the Vikings (8-9) led by Ernidia Goncalves with 16 points plus 14 rebounds.
MEN’S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
Endicott 3, Rivier 2: Jake Laborde had 20 kills and the Gulls (1-1) outlasted their foes with a 17-15 win in the tiebreaking fifth set.
