PLATTSBURGH — SUNY Plattsburgh President Alexander Enyedi announced the return of Upward Bound on Wednesday., an academic advisement, counseling and leadership opportunity program for high schoolers in the region.
All TRIO Upward Bound office services at SUNY Plattsburgh were paused indefinitely in September 2025 when two grants were suspended by the U.S. Department of Education. The university submitted two letters of appeal for a continuation of the grants immediately after receiving the news.
SUNY Plattsburgh Chief of Staff Heather Haskins said the DOE awarded the University a continuation grant for the program.
“For decades, Upward Bound has provided valuable educational opportunities and support services to students throughout our region, and we appreciate the department’s decision to continue funding the program,” she said.
Assemblymember Michael Cashman (D-Plattsburgh) released a statement Wednesday in support of the news.
“I am ecstatic. Last year’s sudden termination of the Upward Bound program at SUNY Plattsburgh was incredibly shocking and heartbreaking,” he said. “Upward Bound is more than just a college preparation program, it is a community.
“As a proud product of a sister TRIO program, I know just how critical programs like Upward Bound are for our students and the region at large.”
