UPDATE – 10:06 a.m.: Law enforcement is still in the parking lot, and the school is still on a soft lockdown. This is the latest update from the interim director of schools.
UPDATE – 9:08 a.m.: It was a traumatic experience for parents dropping their children off for school caught in the incident. Children were whisked into the building and parents were held in place until the area was searched.
UPDATE – 9:06 a.m.: A strong law enforcement presence remains but school is now in soft lockdown. Police now believe the man could have been waiting on a ride and got picked up and taken from the area but deputies are remaining in the area.
UPDATE – 9:02 a.m.: A mother dropping off her kids reported seeing the man and clearly saw a holstered handgun. School was put in a hard lockdown while police searched the area.
UPDATE – 9:01 a.m.: A man told School Resource Officer Avery Aytes who alerted local area law enforcement as he proceeded to Dunbar road. Over a dozen law enforcement responded to the scene.
8:59 a.m.: A deputy told the Chronicle they observed a tall man dressed in a camouflage coat and jeans was spotted standing in the parking lot of a business across from the entrance to Brown Elementary on Dunbar road.
8:21 a.m.: Frank P. Brown Elementary School has been placed on a precautionary lockdown. The situation is unknown. Incoming students are being ushered inside behind locked doors. Interim Director of Schools Rebecca Farley is en route to the school.
