Quarm starts fast
Methuen three-time Eagle-Tribune track MVP Lauren Quarm is off to a fast start to her senior season.
At the recent MSTCA Boston Holiday Challenge, Quarm won the 55-meter in 7.17, then matched her own Methuen High indoor school record in the 200-meter in 25.95, good for third place at the meet. A week earlier, she also won the dash at the MSTCA Speed Classic (7.19).
Wallace to Braves
Methuen’s Jacob Wallace has signed a minor league deal with the Atlanta Braves, MLB.com reports, and has been assigned to triple-A Gwinnett.
This marks the fourth organization for the former Methuen High (class of 2016) and UConn star, since being selected in the third round of the 2019 MLB Draft by Colorado. In six professional seasons with the Rockies (2019), Red Sox (2021-22) and Royals (2023-25) organizations, the relief pitcher has appeared in 228 games, advancing as high as triple-A, going 20-15 with 22 saves, a 4.22 ERA and 369 strikeouts in 281.2 innings.
Bobo a captain
Former North Andover resident Jake Bobo has been named a captain for the Seattle Seahawks for the regular season finale vs. the San Francisco 49ers — a game that will determine the NFC West title and the No. 1 seed in the NFC.
It will be the second time Bobo has served as captain, doing so in the state of California, where he starred for UCLA. Bobo, who grew up on the Brooks School campus, has caught two passes in 10 games this fall, and in three NFL seasons has 34 catches for 323 yards and three touchdowns.
Last September, he was named a captain in the Seahawks win against the Patriots.
Mazzie leads Bowl win
Central Catholic alum Nick Mazzie booted three field goals, including a pair in the fourth quarter that proved to be the game-deciding points, as East Carolina beat Pittsburgh 23-17 in the Go Bowling Military Bowl on ESPN last Saturday.
Mazzie made a 42-yard field goal in the second quarter, the team’s lone points in the first half, then hit kicks of 33 yards and 28 yards in the fourth quarter for the win. He was also 2 for 2 on extra points. He finished the season with 16 field goals and 43 for 43 on PATs.
One Final Thought
As Michael Muldoon used to say, “If you can bring a smile to someone’s face today, just do it!
