Martin National Title-bound
Former North Andover High superstar Hannah Martin and her Smith College women’s basketball team are headed to their second straight Division 3 National Title Game.
Martin, a sophomore, scored a game-high 18 points — including the game-clinching free throw — as Smith edged Wisconsin-Oshkosh 49-47 in the Final Four on Thursday.
North Andover High’s All-Time leading scorer and the Pioneers will take on New York University in the title game on Saturday (4 p.m.) at the Cregger Center in Salem, Virginia.
Wolinski falls in Final Four
North Andover’s Zach Wolinski and Wesleyan University fell to Trinity, 73-69, in the Division 3 Final Four on Thursday. Wolinski, the 2024 Eagle-Tribune boys basketball MVP, finished his freshman college season averaging 4.1 points a game.
Trinity, coached by Andover’s Jamie Cosgrove, will play New York University in the title game on Saturday (4 p.m.) at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Santell a Corsair
Eagle-Tribune All-Star Lawrence High linebacker Elijah Santell will continue his football career at UMass Dartmouth, he announced this week.
The hard-hitting, two-time All-Merrimack Valley Conference pick is following in the footsteps of his big brother, Brandon Santell, who also starred for the Lancers before delivering a standout career at Assumption College (44 tackles as a senior).
Descheneaux to SNHU
Methuen High track standout Elizabeth Descheneaux will continue her athletic career at Southern New Hampshire University. This winter in the high jump, Descheneaux scored a personal best of 5-0, while taking fourth at the Division 1 Championship and fifth at MVCs.
Deluca picks Fitchburg
Former Andover High hockey standout Anthony Deluca (AHS class of 2024) will continue his career at Fitchburg State, he announced.
Deluca recently wrapped up a postgraduate year at the Winchendon School, tallying 10 goals and 13 assists in 31 games. As a senior for Andover High, the center notched eight goals and eight assists in 22 games.
Sanford strong in AHL
Former Pinkerton Academy star Zach Sanford hasn’t returned to the NHL this season, but he is delivering a strong season the American Hockey League. The former Eagle-Tribune MVP has tallied 13 goals and 20 assists in 59 games for the Rockford IceHogs, the AHL affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks.
