TRAVERSE CITY — Two local beaches are under advisory because of unsafe E. coli levels.
No body contact is recommended with the water at Acme Bayside Park; Grand Traverse Health Department officials declared the beach a Level 3 after mid-week water testing showed 1,045 E. coli colonies per 100 milliliters. No body contact means no swimming, wading, fishing or boating.
One Leelanau County beach also showed elevated E. coli — testing at Northport Marina found 980 colonies per 100/ml which is a Level 2, or partial body contact advisory. Swimming isn’t recommended but below-the-waist activities like wading, fishing and boating is OK.
Both beaches will be retested Thursday, Sept. 10 with results reported on Friday.
All other beaches in both Grand Traverse County and Leelanau-Benzie beaches met Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy water quality standards and remain at Level 1, supporting full-body contact.
