Vincent Magee didn’t let any bad hole slow him down.
To begin Tuesday’s Division 3 North Sectional tournament at Stow Acres Country Club, the Triton senior had to stare down the tough 440-yard, par-4 second as his opening hole in the shotgun start. He scrambled his way to a bogey, but then three holes later, unfortunately carded a double-bogey 7 on the par-5 fifth.
Right then, it would have been easy to give up on the round.
But that wasn’t part of the gameplan for the day.
Magee immediately responded with a birdie on the 520-yard, par-5 sixth hole, fueling a round that saw him make three birdies with seven pars. When he came up to the clubhouse after the 18 holes were finished, the final tally stood at an 8-over 80 for the day, which was good for a T6 finish out of the 53 golfers that had qualified to compete in the Sectional.
Triton didn’t qualify as a team, and as a result, could only send one golfer to play in Tuesday’s round. It was a tough choice to make with a handful of talented golfers at the top of the Vikings’ lineup, but it’s safe to say that Magee represented the program well. His round included a birdie on the par-3 11th hole, as well as on the par-5 18th — which came after a stretch of four bogeys and a double.
So, again, Magee didn’t let anything get him down.
And with the finish, Magee punched his ticket to compete at next week’s Division 3 State Championship as an individual.
