Our library in Chatsworth isn’t the biggest library you’ll ever visit. We aren’t exactly small but we are limited with the number of books that we can house. Fortunately, PINES library cardholders can check out books, movies and video games from more than 300 other libraries in the state for free. Whitney Barnes and her family use this service to great effect. As one of our regular patrons I recently asked Barnes some questions about why the library is valuable to her.
Request: Tell us a little about yourself.
Barnes: I grew up in Whitfield County but now live in Chatsworth. I have been married for over 14 years to my wonderful husband. I am a college graduate and now a homeschool mama to our two amazing children. I am a Christian, and God has blessed me so much.
Question: How do you use the library?
Barnes: Since we homeschool, we are constantly getting books and DVDs from the library about what we are currently learning or just things that we are interested in. I love that we are able to use PINES to request them from libraries across our state. We also enjoy the children’s programs and activities that they offer monthly.
Q: Why is the library important to you?
Barnes: The library is so important to our family because of the valuable resources it has. It greatly enriches our homeschool experience. The librarians are always so friendly and helpful and I look forward to seeing them every time we go. The community events are also fun and interesting. The summer reading challenge performers are some of our favorites.
Q: What is your favorite book of all time?
Barnes: My favorite book of all time is the Holy Bible. It helps me in all areas of my life.
Q: What was the last book you recommended to a friend?
Barnes: The last book I recommended to a friend was probably “The Green Ember” series by S.D. Smith. My children and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading them aloud. The adventures follow siblings Heather and Picket as they get caught up in an epic struggle for rabbitkind’s liberation from the tyrannous preylords. Humor, heart and hope anchor this series that centers on small rabbits battling to keep faith amid the chaos all around them.
Q: If you could have three authors over for dinner (living or dead), who would you invite?
Barnes: There are so many that I admire, but right now I would probably choose Sally Clarkson, C.S. Lewis and Patricia Polacco.
• Any of the homeschool resources/books by authors that Barnes mentioned can be checked out with a PINES library card. And if you would like to attend any of our free library events please drop by for a calendar, call the library at (706) 695-4200 and find us on Facebook, X and Instagram for more information.
