Where is your hometown?
My hometown is Athens, Alabama, and I am a proud Athens Golden Eagle.
Why did you become a teacher?
I became a teacher because I love sharing knowledge and helping others learn. I want to make a difference in children’s lives by helping them discover their love of learning.
How many years have you been a teacher?
I have been in education for 12 years.
How many years have you been with Athens City Schools?
I have been with Athens City Schools for 12 years.
What is the best part of your day?
The best part of my day is the excitement when students grasp a new concept. The light in their faces when they are so proud of themselves is so rewarding.
Who has been your greatest source of inspiration?
My greatest source of inspiration is my parents and my grandparents.
How do you hope to inspire your students?
I hope to inspire my students by trying hard things and not giving up.
What advice would you like to share with new teachers?
My advice to any new teacher is to lean on your fellow teachers for help and guidance. Get to know your students and their interests and hobbies. Take time to reflect on your practice; continuous improvement is key to growth.
What is your greatest hope for your students?
My greatest hope for my students is that they feel loved and cared for at school while learning skills to help them be successful in life.
What is your family like?
I have two children, Anna Grace and James, who are also proud Athens Golden Eagles.
What are your hobbies, interests or other things you like to do as an individual or as a family?
I love going to concerts, going hiking and spending time with family, friends and my two cats.
Thanksgiving is around the corner. For what are you most grateful?
My family, friends, health and career.
The Alabama Teacher of the Year Program honors and recognizes excellence in the teaching profession by identifying outstanding classroom teachers at local, district and state levels. The Teacher of the Year Program is open to any public school classroom teacher, librarian, counselor or other certified individuals in a K-12 setting.
The Athens City Schools Foundation will honor each Teacher of the Year at the annual ACSF Teacher of the Year Gratitude Banquet on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The Athens City Schools District-Level Elementary (K-6) and Secondary (7-12) Teacher of the Year will be announced at this special event. These teachers will then represent Athens City Schools in the Alabama Teacher of the Year state competition.
