The Cumberland County Community Band will present Take Me to the Movies at 7 p.m. Thursday at Stone Memorial High School, 2800 Cook Road.
This free concert for all ages features musical themes from favorite movies, their well-known composers and classic pieces.
Several instrument soloists will be featured along with a few theatrical surprises. The band includes high school band members from Stone Memorial and Cumberland County High School.
Musical highlights include:
John Williams: Fantasy of Flight arranged by Robert W. Smith. Four movie themes take flight for this dynamic medley in its adventure for conquering the skies and galaxies above. The audience is sure to recognize themes from “E.T.,” “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” “Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace” and “Star Wars: A New Hope.” Williams’ compositions have brought a perfect blend of sight and sound to the big screen for these wonderful movie productions.
Lawrence of Arabia by Maurice Jarre/arranged by Alfred Reed and Mark Rogers. Having received 10 Academy Award nominations, this epic film won Best Original Score for the masterful music. This arrangement for band consists of two main themes: the Arabian motif, with its blazing color and almost barbaric effects; and the Lawrence theme, a haunting, poignant melody that reflects both his love of the desert and his internal psychological conflicts. The percussion section is featured throughout this selection.
Happy (from “Despicable Me 2”) by Pharrell Williams/arranged By Mike Tomaro. Every section of the band gets into the act in this chart topper megahit. Audience participation is encouraged as clapping along is sure to take all to their happy place.
Rainbows arranged By Jack Bullock. This piece features a musical pot of gold with three melodies that capture color, peaceful experiences and the wonders of nature. It features “(Somewhere) Over the Rainbow,” “Look to the Rainbow” and “Sing A Rainbow.”
At the Movies: The Classics arranged by Justin Williams. This fun-filled trip down memory lane spotlights beloved movies of Tinseltown. Music in this piece include themes from “2001: A Space Odyssey;” “Singing in the Rain;” “The Good, The Bad, And the Ugly;” and “The Wizard of Oz.”
Hollywood Milestones arranged by John Higgins. Spanning 25 years of film history, the band presents some of the most dramatic, exciting soundtrack music ever written. Selections in this medley include “Back to The Future;” “Beauty and The Beast;” “Chariots of Fire;” “Theme from E.T.;” “Forrest Gump-Main Title;” “Theme from Jurassic Park;” “Apollo 13-Main Title;” “Raiders March;” “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” and “Where Do I Begin (Love Theme).”
The band is under the direction of conductor Bill Kerr and assistant conductor Ruth Ann Tuten. Its membership includes residents from Crossville and neighboring cities and towns. It also includes some talented high school band students.
The band is proud to support local high school musicians with the Patricia and Emery Nagy Scholarship, created in memory of two founding members. High school students who participate in high school band and the Cumberland County Community Band are eligible to apply for scholarships from $500-$2,000.
The band also supports the STARTS program which provides additional funding goals for the fine arts programs (band, chorus, classroom, music, drama and visual arts) in the Cumberland County School System.
