A Lockport family with a legacy of comfort cooking will open a new soul food restaurant downtown this month. Shirley “Suge” Wyche will lead a multi-generational team at Suge-n-Betty’s American Soul Food at 285 Walnut St.
Marcus Wyche, better known as 2nd Ward alderman and a Lockport Lions football coach, will take turns in the kitchen with his wife Jennifer, sisters Toya and Danielle, and brothers Daron and Kenny Wyche.
Wyche said the menu will focus on authentic Southern soul food, including barbecued ribs, chuck roast, smothered pork chops, barbecued, baked, and fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, tuna mac salad, collard greens, baked beans, and corn muffins. Hamburgers will be available for lunch and kids’ meals, Wyche said.
The family previously operated a take-out restaurant in Cambria and they wanted to bring the business to the city.
Wyche said customers will become fans of his collard greens, which he said he cooks “from the heart, low and slow. I stand by my collards.”
An exact opening date has not been set, but is expected this month, Wyche said.
