Richmond dialed in
Colin Richmond has grown pretty comfortable with winning.
The former Newburyport High golf and hockey captain is still tearing up the links for Salem State University, and over the weekend helped the program win its third Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) championship in four years. Now a senior, Richmond fired a two-day total of 150 (77-73, +8) at Ranch Golf Club to finish inside of the top-4 golfers, and helped the Vikings (+43 as a team) hold of MCLA (+51) to take home the league crown once again.
Richmond earned All-MASCAC First Team honors with his finish, and Salem State also punched its ticket back to compete at Nationals.
Fuller-to-Craig too much
It’s never a bad idea to give Sam Craig a 50-50 ball down the sideline.
The connection the 6-foot-1 wide receiver has with quarterback Colin Fuller is evident, and last week the duo led Newburyport’s offensive eplosion in the team’s 48-21 win over Essex Tech. Craig hauled in six catches for 101 yards and three touchdowns, helping Fuller enjoy a memorable night where he completed 13-of-16 passes for 295 yards and six TDs. Fuller also found his other top target, Eli Sirota (3-102-1) on a score, and Braydon Fowler and Tyler Chorebanian hauled in TD passes of 51 and 18 yards, respectively.
Connor McGovern had the final touchdown for the Clippers (1-3) on a rush, and defensively Fowler had five tackles and an interception while both Craig and Paul Suozzo had sacks. Fuller, who also had a team-high 42 rushing yards, now has 11 TD passes through just four games this fall — and is quickly approaching the Newburyport single-season record of 22 held by former great Joe Clancey (NHS ‘09).
Trio of Engineers
The college football team with the most local flare to it this fall might be WPI.
The Engineers (3-1) feature three former area athletes in graduate student QB Stephen MacDonald of Georgetown, sophomore DB Matt Sauris of Salisbury and senior DL John Donovan of Newburyport. MacDonald has 59 passing yards and 24 rushing yards in one appearance this year, while Sauris and Donovan have yet to record a defensive stat.
Learn to Skate Program
The Newburyport Youth Hockey Learn to Skate Program will begin on Sunday, October 20th, and will meet for 15 sessions (Sundays at 10am) at the Graf Rink. All towns are welcome to sign up. The program normally is for ages 4 and up, but will consider 3-year-olds as well.
Registration is available at: www.nyhl.org.
Captains Corner
Captains Corner submissions are now being accepted for the 2024 fall season. A decent amount have already rolled in, but there are still plenty of local sports teams that haven’t been submitted. Coaches — or parents or the athletes themselves — who would like their captains featured are welcome to submit a photo to kgaudette@newburyportnews.com. Photos should have all captains featured and ideally be in their jerseys.
