Doyle signs with CardinalsIt didn’t take long after Sunday’s MLB Draft for Derry, N.H.’s Liam Doyle to sign.
The fifth overall pick with the St. Louis Cardinals, out of the University of Tennessee, reportedly signed $7.24 million, close to the “slotted” value of $8.13 million.
Doyle was the third pitcher chosen.
Doyle played his first two college seasons at Coastal Carolina and Ole Miss — before clicking the past spring at Tennessee.
He had a 3.20 ERA across 95.2 innings in the nation’s best conference.
The 6-foot-2 left-hander struck out 43 percent of opposing hitters, 164 K’s overall.
Unsigned Dunham still hopingFormer North Andover High baseball star Brett Dunham had the best year of his career this past spring for Northeastern University baseball.
He was among the top relievers in all of college baseball, leading the nation allowing only a .155 batting average.
He is still hoping to get signed as a free agent. Thus far, seven of his former teammates were drafted (5) or signed (2).
Story’s run underrated
While the “kids” have earned most of the attention as well as a few pitchers, don’t sleep on Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story.
In 38 games since June 1, he is hitting .319 with a .911 OPS (46-for-144, 27 R, 10 2B, 8 HR, 35 RBI, 8 BB).
His 35 RBI ranks tied for 3rd in MLB since June 1.

Oppenheim off to good start
After taking a week off from the Korn Ferry Tour, former Andover resident Rob Oppenheim has returned to action in style.
Oppenheim carded a 4-under par 68, tied for 14th in the Price Cutter Charity Championship in Springfield, Ill. The early leader was 9-under par through the first round.
Oppenheim, who resides in Orlando, Fla., is currently ranked 58th overall in the Korn Ferry points race with eight more tournaments to follow. The top 20 are guaranteed a spot in the PGA Tour in 2026.
Oppenheim will probably need a victory or several top 10 finishes to make a run.
