DANVILLE — March is Women’s History Month, with this Sunday highlighting the efforts of women worldwide with International Women’s Day.
Fredrika Parr, the president of the Women’s Auxiliary in Danville, said this is an event they do each year during International Women’s Month in March.
“We’ve been doing this for several years now, and people will nominate them to us,” she said. “Some of the members of our group will bring the names forward, and then we select from the names that we have submitted to us who we’re going to honor.”
This year, the following local women were selected to be highlighted: Catherine Ewing, Sister Mary Ann McCullough, Dr. Aline Denise Nelson, Aleta Randale, Mary Catherine Roberson, and Bonnie Jean Scott.
Parr said at the event that every woman chosen will be briefly honored.
“They were asked to give us the name of the person that they would want to introduce them, and that person introduces them,” she added. “If the ladies have comments that they want to give, they can; otherwise, some of them just say ‘thank you’ and move on.”
The event is taking place 4:30 p.m. Sunday at The Women’s Auxiliary of Laura Lee Fellowship House.
There will be refreshments provided as well.
Parr says if you want to nominate someone to be honored next year, contact them by February with a written statement to the attention of the Women’s Auxiliary. Either dropped off or mailed to the organization. The Laura Lee Fellowship House is located at 212 E Williams St, Danville, IL 61832.
“Individuals have to have their names submitted to a club member who brings it to the rest of the group,” Parr said. “This year, we received a couple of nominees named through the mail that someone in the community felt that we should select.”
As far as those selected this year, Parr said two women chosen turned down the honor.
“One turned it down because she felt that she was just doing what she felt that she was supposed to do,” she said. “The other one was going to be out of town, so we told her that we would keep her name and bring her name forward again next year.”
