PLATTSBURGH — One of the more competitive games of the Section VII high school boys’ basketball season took place Thursday night when Schroon Lake outlasted Seton Catholic, 64-61, in double overtime in Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference play.
The Wildcats didn’t hold their first lead of the game until the first overtime, but were able to prevail.
Nathan Melville dropped in a game-high 22 points and knocked down 12 free throws to lead Schroon Lake.
“Free throws and rebounding were the difference in the game,” Seton Catholic coach Larry Converse said.
“Defensively, I thought we played very well. Our offense, however, at times sputtered. But we can get better, and we showed a lot of heart. It’s a game that hurts in the moment, but one we can learn from in the long run.”
The Wildcats went to the charity stripe 31 times as compared to just nine times for the Knights.
Austin Hartwell and Josiah Melville also hit in double figures for Schroon Lake with 17 and 12 points, respectively.
Michael Mannix powered Seton Catholic with 29 points and Oliver Hughes ended up with 11. Both hit a trio of three-pointers.
