CRESAPTOWN — Calvary junior Sammy Scritchfield scored his 100th career goal, and added numbers 101 and 102 in a hat trick, leading the No. 3 Eagles to a 3-0 win over Faith on Thursday.
“Sammy is a premier striker,” Calvary head coach Dave Ziler said. “Every team we face has to account for him. Lately, we’ve seen as many as five or six players marking him — yet more often than not, he still finds a way to score. He beats the odds because he puts in the work.”
Scritchfield joins his brother Isaac, the area Player of the Year in 2021, and Ryan Chaney as the only Calvary players to surpass 100 goals.
Scritchfield is also one goal shy of passing Chaney’s single-season record of 47.
“The best thing about Sammy isn’t his goal total, it’s who he is,” Ziler said. “He’s a great young man. He’ll be a great husband and father one day. That’s the real goal of youth sports.”
The moment came at the 9:51 mark of the first half off an assist from Elijah Ziler.
Scritchfield took a quick touch at the top of the 18-yard box and fired a shot in the bottom left corner.
“These 100 goals come with a lifetime of lessons, perseverance, teamwork, friendship, and discipline,” Ziler said. “And Sammy embodies them all.”
Scritchfield scored again at the 17:09 mark off a long ball from goalie Peyton Poland before finishing in the top right corner.
With Calvary leading 2-0 at halftime, Scritchfield secured a hat trick at the 58:28 mark of the second half after Gerald Mihailovich intercepted a ball and cleared it to Scritchfield.
The Eagles led in shots 11-6 and 3-0 in corner kicks.
Poland and Faith’s Daniel Hobbs each recorded six saves.
With the win, Calvary clinched the top spot in the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference and earned a first round bye.
The Eagles will host the winner of Cumberland Valley and New Life on Thursday.
