CRESAPTOWN — Sammy Scritchfield broke Calvary’s single-season goals record, leading the No. 3 Eagles to a 3-1 win over Cumberland Valley in the semifinals of the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference (MDCC) on Thursday.
Scritchfield surpassed Ryan Blaney with his 48th goal of the season.
Scritchfield opened the scoring 29 seconds into the game off a Gerald Mihailovich assist.
The record-breaker came at the 3:55 mark on a shot in the bottom left corner.
Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Blazers scored 45 seconds into the second half on a Nick Kendall goal off Turner Egolf’s assist.
A corner kick from Silas Leith deflected off Luke Kamauf’s head, setting up Jake MacGray for a score at the 73:27 mark for the Eagles.
Cumberland Valley led 14-11 in shots while Calvary led 10-2 in corner kicks.
“Calvary’s defense, led by Mihailovich, Chais Murphy, Leith, and Hayden Kamauf, held strong,” Calvary assistant coach Bill Scritchfield said. “Midfielders Elijah Ziler and Jake MacGray controlled play and won key possessions throughout the match.”
Peyton Poland recorded 13 saves for the Eagles while Quinten Cooper added eight for the Blazers.
Calvary advances to the MDCC Championship Game on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Grace Academy at Smithsburg High School.
