Remembering Derry’s fallen veterans
DERRY — Councilor Charlie Foote is running a new volunteer opportunity for people to give back to those who served in the military.
The project, called Derry Honors Fallen Heroes, will have volunteers working with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Foote to find and restore the graves of veterans interred at Forest Hill Cemetery, behind First Parish Congregational Church, 47 E Derry Road.
According to the project’s website, there are potentially more than 1,000 veterans buried at Forest Hill Cemetery. There have been 400 markers discovered and many of those markers were completely underground.
Derry Honors Fallen Heroes began with an Eagle Scout project that Foote helped with. Once all of the markers are uncovered, the group will work to create a digital database to map out where each veteran is buried.
